Fatal Rapids accident at

Dreamworld The Australian amusement park Dreamworld was, at the time of writing, closed until further notice following an accident on its Thunder River Rapids ride that left four people dead. One of the ride's rafts reportedly upended, trapping two passengers inside and causing two others to be caught by the conveyor belt underneath during the incident on October 25. Police confirmed that four people, two men and two women, were aged beteen 32 and 42. Water from the ride, which is one one of the oldest attractions in the park, originally opening in 1986, was apparently drained in an effort to save the victims. Other guests were asked to leave the park soon after, unless they could provide any witness statements. “Dreamworld is working as quickly as possible to establish the facts around the incident and is working closely with emergency authorities and police to do this,” the park said in an official statement. “Dreamworld’s focus and priority is with the families of those involved in this tragedy and we will be providing an update to the public as soon as information becomes available.”

Located on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Dreamworld is one of several big parks in this popular tourist destination and the accident occurred just as they were limbering up for the peak summer season next month. Shares in Ardent Leisure Group, which owns Dreamworld, plunged after the accident, as did (to a lesser extent) those of Village Roadshow, operator of the rival Warner Bros Movie World and Sea World parks.
