MASSIV
achievement
Schlitterbahn's award-winning water coaster
Show from the World Waterpark Association in New Orleans, WhiteWater's MASSIV waterslide coaster at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island in Texas stand over 81 feet (24m) tall and features 926 feet (282m) of green, white and red slide sections, or 135 segments in total. With elements including four uphill blasts, seven translucent segments and a never-done-before triple down landing,
T
the ride became an instant hit with thrill seekers when it was launched at the waterpark this summer. Yet it's notable also for its clever, efficient design. A ride as epic as this requires a lot of power to propel riders up and over its many peaks and valleys. Whereas the jets used to power guests uphill on previous water coasters would have been continuously on, pumping water non-stop, resulting in an inefficient use of power and water, WhiteWater has developed new 'Smart Blast' technology. This uses variable frequency drives (VFDs) and a proprietary control algorithm to dynamically adjust pump speeds while the ride is in operation. By ramping up motor speed only when it’s needed, it is more energy efficient and also reduces the wear and tear on the mechanical equipment. WWA’s Leading Edge Awards are given to parks and suppliers who have “developed new concepts, products or
services to the benefit of park members, their customers and the water attractions industry.” MASSIV's energy efficient credentials are clearly of great benefit to Schlitterbahn as an operator.
Ninjago World will kick off
2017 at Legoland Florida Stand by martial arts fans with a penchant for Lego and theme parks (there has to be a few of you). Legoland Florida is getting ready to open Ninjago World, the new ninja- themed land dedicated to the Lego Ninjago toy line and TV series.
Opening on January 12,
it follows hot on the heels of the new Ninjago World at Legoland Malaysia, which opens this month. As with that and the existing Ninjago Worlds in Bilund (Denmark), California and soon Legoland Deustchland in Germany, the freshly themed land will be anchored by a 4D interactive dark ride. Ninjago The Ride, from Triotech and ride system supplier ART Engineering, will feature gesture- based technology (rather than shooters) that allows Legoland guests to blast animated fireballs, lightning and more at waves of 3D villains simply by moving their hand. Also featured will be a giant Lego building experience called Zane’s Temple Build together with several hands-on, outdoor activities (such as a climbing wall) where kids can sharpen their ninja skills before the ultimate showdown on Ninjago The Ride. The lushly
landscaped area also will feature daily meet-and-greet opportunities with sibling ninjas Kai and Nya, and Wu’s Warehouse, a themed shop.
