Middle East show reflect industry growth
ast montth’s DEAL trade show in Dubai was well attended, reflecting to some extent the significant growth of the parks and attractions industry in the
United Arab Emirates (UAE) and beyond. “We have seen a great industry transformation over the
last few years and there has been a paradigm shift,” notes Abdul Rahman Falaknaz chairman of DEAL organiser International Expo Consults. “Aside from the region’s rising number of projects and developments, the growth drivers today are MENA’s [Middle East and North Africa] retail, tourism and hospitality industries.” Dubai Entertainment, Amusement and Leisure – to give it its full title – took place at the city’s World Trade Centre from April 17 to 19, featuring over 300 exhibitors from 33 countries. The event was preceded on April 15 by a one- day event called DEAL Live! organised by Blooloop, not the first conference held in partnership with the show but perhaps one of the best in terms of speakers. “We took part in DEAL as we were looking forward to being a part of another exciting year of development for the Middle East, the fastest growing region for thematic attractions in the world,” reported Peter Sanderson of the Sanderson Group. “The Middle East is an exciting, robust and growing
market that offers ample opportunities in the entertainment and leisure industry for its customers,” added Michael Nowak of Rhode Island Novelty, a USA-based supplier of prizes and toys. If you want some attractions industry educational or
networking opportunities in Dubai before the return of DEAL in 2017, consider attending the Theme Parks & Entertainment Development Forum (
themeparksme.com) due to take place at Atlantis The Palm from May 22 to 25, or the IAAPA Safety Institute, dates to be confirmed.

17th RAAPA Expo
During its three-day run in March, RAAPA Expo in Moscow was attended by around 4,000 industry professionals from the theme park, amusement park, FEC and related industries. Held from March 3 to 5, the event at the
Russian capital's VDNH exhibition grounds was organised by the Russian Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (RAAPA), ans supported by IAAPA. General sponsor was the prominent local ride manufacturer Pax. Around 200 companies from over 20
countries participated in the event as exhibitors, including 35 making their RAAPA debut. Among the products and services on display, it is worth singling out two for their ubiquity this year: gyro cycles and trackless trains. Suppliers of go-karts and “active leisure” attractions were also prominent, especially rope courses and climbing walls both of Russian and foreign manufacture. Meanwhile a new section of the exhibition called Amusement Industry Franchise offered turn-key business solutions to business owners and potential new operators. The best exhibits were awarded with
RAAPA golden medals including Brunswick, KidsPlay, Polin Waterparks, Italpark, PlaySpace, Game City, RIF, Sparta, Aira, New Horizons and Leisure Activities (China). Meanwhile a gala dinner on the first night saw the presentation of the Golden Pony Awards Moscow 2016, with recognition for parks and FECs including Amusement Complex Aquapark Lebyazhy (Minsk, Belarus), Attraction-café 3 Medvedya (Samara), Belinsky Park (Penza), Bolid company (St Petersburg), Fantastic Park
25
(Almaty, Kazakhstan), FEC Focus Mocus (Tbilisi, Georgia), the Funky Town chain of FECs (Uralsk), KidBurg (Voronezh), Maza Park (St Petersburg) and Park Sokolniki (Moscow). Further plaudits were handed out by the magazine Attractions & Entertainments during its Park Heroes awards. The exhibition was accompanied by a topical conference programme attended by around 450 specialists from Russia, the CIS countries, Spain, the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Turkey and Mexico. Despite challenges, the amusement industry
in Russia is developing, reports RAAPA. Over the past 17 years the association’s exhibition has attained the status of the most efficient business platform for the professionals from across Eastern Europe, and the 2016 gathering was no different. Dates for next year's main Expo have been confirmed as March 15 to 17, but before that a smaller show will take place at the same venue from October 12 to 14.
