SEASON PREVIEW: NORTH AMERICA Volcano Bay, Universal Orlando

Season Preview: NORTH AMERICA I 6

t's not just growth markets like the Middle East and Asia that are seeing action right now. There's plenty going on in the supposedly 'mature' North American market this year, too. A

brand new amusement park, an extensively-themed waterpark, the world of Pandora, multimedia battles and of course rollercoasters and other amusement rides; all this and more is promised for park guests in the USA and Canada during 2017.

NEW PARKS The eagerly-awaited Volcano Bay opens at Universal Orlando resort opens on May 27, bringing with it a new level of themed aquatic recreation and several industry innovations. Sitting at the epicentre of this new Polynesian-themed waterpark is the 200-feet- tall (61m) Krakatau volcano, dispersing waterfalls by day and lava flows at night. A 125ft-tall (38m) trap door-launch speed slide will

travel through the volcano. Other attractions include rafts, rapids, racing and body slides as well as a wave pool, water play fortress, lazy river and sandy beaches. A unique feature of this, Universal Orlando's third park, will be the TapuTapu wristbands issued to guests on arrival. These wearable devices will make the waterpark experience as hassle-free and fun-filled as possible as patrons virtually wait in line for Volcano Bay’s dozens of attractions and discover various TapTu Play experiences with a simple tap. Over in Foley, Alabama, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians is

building OWA amusement park in an effort to diversify its business interests beyond gambling. The 14-acre (5.7 hectare) park will feature 20 rides by Zamperla from large scale rollercoasters to kiddie rides. There will be three rollercoasters including Rollin' Thunder, similar to Zamperla's existing Thunderbolt ride at Coney Island, as well as a wild mouse and family coaster.
