Years ago when I was producing events for Knott’s Berry Farm, revenues from those events were responsible for generating a large percentage of the park’s annual profit. As director of entertainment and show development for the Disney parks worldwide, my team at Disneyland was tasked with creating a full calendar of events at the park. Disneyland’s

attendance, unlike Walt Disney World’s in Florida, is largely based on the local market in Southern California. We knew it was important to create something new to promote throughout the year, giving people a reason to come back again and again. Special events transformed the look of both Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm, and provided area residents with a great reason for returning for special seasonal celebrations. These events can go well beyond Christmas and Halloween. Different areas of the country – or indeed different countries around the world – all have unique festivities and cultural traditions that
can be featured in events at the park. These can include things like jazz festivals, Chinese New Year, Carnival, the Hindu festivals of Holi and Diwali, the Day of the Dead, the Mid-Autumn Festival and Winter Solstice; anything that can be an excuse for fun and capture the public’s imagination! Over the years at Disneyland we held
celebrations for Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day, and a Cinco de Mayo festival that featured a gathering of Charros (uniformed horseman on glittering saddles), something not seen at other Cinco de Mayo gatherings. Easter was a huge event highlighted by a spectacular
