MOTIVATING EMPLOYEES

Bala McAlinn, second from right in pink shirt, on (re)opening day at Dreamland

Be enthusiastic! Top tips for motivating employees in parks and attractions

all season. B

“Enthusiasm is the most important thing in life” – Tennessee Williams

I recently performed alongside some of the leading lights from the hospitality, leisure and attractions industries in a pantomime to raise money for the Springboard charity (springboarduk.org.uk). A diverse group of of ages, with differing skills, contrasting confidences, different opinions and varying aptitudes, we all came together with the aim of putting on a great show.

During the pantomime we encountered

many barriers but we overcame these challenges and we reached our goal and the driving force behind our success was the enormous amount of ENTHUSIASM that we all had. We cast aside differing opinions, solved

problems, encouraged, supported and praised each other, we bonded, we co- operated and we created a shared vision for the project. After the pantomime finished, I started

thinking about the similarities between putting on this pantomime and the work we did on the recruitment and training of staff during the relaunch of Dreamland in Margate, England.

The Kent amusement park, reimagined

with music, art and vintage rides, offered a unique experience as it was essentially a brand new visitor attraction, reopening after 12 years. Here we faced similar challenges of having to encourage a large and diverse group of people to get behind a shared vision and deliver a great experience under often challenging conditions. We decided very quickly that our main

focus would be to leverage ENTHUSIASM to motivate the team and shape the culture of the park. The staff culture didn't exist previously, there were no guidelines in place, there weren't any experienced staff who could guide newer ones and we had no idea how guests might react in different situations. We initially worked with the management, the design and the marketing teams to help define the message they wanted to get across to staff
