REFRIGERANTS The growth of natural, sustainable
cleaning solutions for refrigeration As the world embraces sustainability – we’re seeing a big shift in the nature of cleaning solutions, and the innovation of a new generation of eff ective natural sanitisation products. Brent Stansfi eld, director of natural sanitation specialists at Bioshield Systems, examines the trend, and explores some of the advantages of all natural cleaning solutions for refrigeration systems.
T
horough cleaning is an essential part of refrigeration and air conditioning maintenance schedules – and having eff ective cleaning agents and programmes in place is especially important for refrigeration spaces and cold storage rooms used to store food and medical supplies. Traditional chemical cleaning products may be eff ective,
but they can have downsides, from both a human health and sustainability perspective.
Consistently handling tough cleaning products exposes end-users who work with these chemicals to potential health risks. This is most prevalent in situations where individuals are required to work in confi ned spaces such as refrigeration and cold storage facilities. Using harsh chemicals to sanitise refrigeration rooms can also impact the air quality, resulting in toxic components being repeatedly inhaled by cleaning teams. As a result, cleaning professionals working with traditional solutions often require PPE to protect them from the eff ects. If handled without gloves, the harsh chemicals can also irritate skin, and some contain carcinogenic materials that may contribute to more serious health conditions over time. In addition to the potential impact on human health, chemical-based cleaners can also have a negative eff ect on the natural environment. Many chemical cleaners used to sanitise refrigeration systems present environmental risks when released into the environment. They can pollute water sources, damage natural ecosystems, and destroy habitats for wildlife.
Natural sanitisation solutions When cleaning in ‘mission critical’ industries such as
refrigeration, performance matters, and no one wants to compromise on sanitation.
Many people still hold outdated misconceptions about
the perceived downsides of natural sanitation solutions in terms of performance and value – they think they are expensive, and don’t work as well as traditional cleaners. Contrary to popular belief, modern natural sanitising solutions can be highly eff ective – off ering comparative performance to chemical solutions. Natural solutions can be just as powerful at sanitisation, achieving the desired results with additional benefi ts such as user and food safety as well as sustainability.

They can also last just as long – with leading products able to provide 30 days of sanitation with a single application.
While standard chemical solutions may appear cheaper,
this isn’t entirely true. Natural solutions can be found at comparatively cost-eff ective prices – and can work out better value when it comes to applied costs. Today, a new generation of all natural cleaning solutions
are coming to the market, off ering a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical cleaners. They can deliver a number of benefi ts for refrigeration applications – from sustainability to safety. Bioshield Systems for example, uses components made from one key ingredient – the pith and peel of oranges.
Natural sanitisation solutions also align with the growing demand for eco-friendly practices – especially in the food and refrigeration industry. As businesses look for easy ways to improve their sustainability credentials, choosing natural cleaning products is a simple part of the solution, with no real downsides. Another key benefi t of natural sanitation solutions is that
they are non-toxic, eliminating health risks whilst being completely food safe. Many natural solutions are odourless – with no VOCs. This presents a clear safety advantage when cleaning poorly ventilated areas and cleaning refrigerators used to store food. The best natural solutions can also last just as long as chemical cleaners. Some are capable of keeping surfaces clean for up to 30 days after application.
