2024 ACR NEWS AWARDS Sustainable climate control

Following a win at the 2023 ACR News Awards, Matteo Dall’Ombra, product manager commercial at Daikin UK explains how the VRV 5 Heat Recovery is leading the decarbonisation of the HVAC industry.

W

e all have a social responsibility to the natural environment. And here at Daikin, we’re putting this commitment at the top of our agenda.

Our products have become vital to people’s lives around the world. However, heating and cooling systems emit large amounts of CO2

from energy consumption during use and

from the impacts of their refrigerants. We also have to consider carbon emissions produced during the manufacturing and distribution of these products. As a manufacturer, Daikin has the responsibility to manufacture our products in a sustainable way. We have a major social duty to protect the natural environment. And, as such, we are creating products that solve, not create, problems. We are determined to pave the way for the industry with our leading environmental technologies.

Our new sustainability champion

It was this commitment to sustainability that led to the creation of the innovative VRV 5 Heat Recovery. It’s our new sustainability champion, and we believe it’s leading the decarbonisation of the HVAC industry. VRV 5 Heat Recovery ensures maximum comfort and

effi ciency while signifi cantly reducing a building’s environmental footprint. What’s more, its intelligent, compact and responsive design makes for fl exible and easy installation in any commercial building. Smarter and more effi cient than ever, VRV 5 technology makes great strides in decarbonising buildings by reducing its direct and indirect CO2

equivalent impact. Our fl exible

heat pump technology can be easily adapted to fi t any building, anywhere, while cutting-edge technology and smart energy management provide comfort with accurate control.

It is taking sustainable climate control to new heights thanks to its highly effi cient new design. The VRV system is more sustainable over its entire lifecycle, reducing the indirect CO2 eq. impact thanks to an eff ective 3-pipe heat recovery design and a seasonal effi ciency with high ηs,c values of up to 298.3%. The system is specifi cally built for R32 refrigerant, greatly eq. impact. It also delivers:

reducing the potential direct CO2

68% less Global Warming Potential (GWP) than R410A, 15% less refrigerant charge than R410A, and 71% GWP reduction across the entire system. Plus, the single component refrigerant charge is easy to reuse and recycle. It’s a perfect partner for any BREEAM, LEED or WELL project. With the system launched to the UK market in September 2022, we now have a few examples of how it works in practice. We’ve pulled out a couple of case studies to

demonstrate the capabilities of the system, and how it can signifi cantly reduce the environmental footprint of a building.

Lincoln University

The University of Lincoln installed Daikin’s VRV5 heat recovery air conditioning in their student village earlier this year. It was the UK debut for the system, and a fi rst for both Daikin and the university. The decision underlines the university’s commitment to environmental improvement and is a signifi cant move towards its net-zero targets. The university’s engineering manager Jason Devlin, himself an experienced refrigeration and heating engineer, wanted to future-proof the building. He didn’t want to replace his old R410A system. He wanted a sustainable solution.

This was important not just for the building’s

environmental footprint, but its occupants too. Jason was aware that some of his students had climate anxiety, so it was important for the Estates Department to show that they cared about the environment. They wanted to install the most energy-effi cient equipment they could get. The full installation included VRV5 Heat Recovery, Fully Flat cassettes, Roundfl ow cassettes, i-Touch Manager, VAM Heat Recovery and Madoka controllers. It needed to service three administrative departments in the building – one on the ground fl oor and two upstairs – in mostly open-plan offi ces but with some separate rooms. The new system was
