COMPANY PROFILE

JSA celebrates 50 years

JSA Service has specialised in providing fi rst-class commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration services for the past 50 years. Services range from installation to energy management for all types and sizes of chillers and HVAC systems. Allan Wilkinson reveals what life is like on the front line.

B

ased in Sunbury-on- Thames, JSA Service provides parts service,

installation, maintenance, and 24- hour emergency call-out service seven days a week and boasts a client base which includes councils, healthcare organisations, charities, the government, non- profi t organisations, and private organisations. This family-owned and managed business has maintained a close culture since its formation. Its perspective is focused on attracting, retaining, and developing exceptional people to provide valued customers with an innovative and professional service that exceeds their expectations and requirements. The company fi rst made its mark in 1973 when, trading then as Joe Storey & Associates, it bought the Trane London franchise. Eventually, in 1991, the business became an independent operation and in 1998, the current managing director Allan Wilkinson started out as an apprentice. Mr Wilkinson came up under the mentorship of JSA Service director, Len Canham. After being headhunted by Trane in 2004 and transitioning into a technical support position, he was approached by JSA Service to serve as managing director in 2009. Subsequently, he acquired the company in 2014, becoming the owner of the same organisation where he initially started as an apprentice.

Greatest moments “One of our greatest achievements

has been the remarkable transformation of the company from a state of fi nancial instability in 2009 to the thriving organisation we are today,” says Mr Wilkinson. “Through strategic planning, diligent eff orts and a collective commitment to success, we have successfully rebuilt the company and propelled it to new heights.

“Equally gratifying is witnessing the younger generation within JSA Service carving out promising careers in the industry. Our investment in internal support and comprehensive training programmes has provided them with valuable opportunities for growth and development. It fi lls us with immense pride to witness their progress and accomplishments, knowing that we have played a part in shaping their futures and contributing to the industry as a

whole. Their success is a testament to our dedication to fostering talent and ensuring a bright future for our company and the industry at large. “There needs to be more

awareness of the HVAC industry to understand the importance of HVAC professionals and the career opportunities available. This could be off ered through schools, apprenticeships, training, and education. At JSA Service, we off er mentorship and guidance, and like to continuously train and educate our engineers to provide ongoing support.”

On the other hand, nothing is

ever easy and Mr Wilkinson shares his thoughts on the current state of the market. “Currently, one of the main challenges we face is the extended lead times on parts,” he says. “Alongside this, the shortage of engineers in our industry is worsening and unless we take

substantial action, this issue will escalate to a point where minor problems turn into major crises. “With the rapid electrifi cation of systems and the growing demand for big data, the requirements for cooling systems are becoming even more demanding. Consequently, we are in dire need of highly skilled engineers to meet these intensifi ed cooling needs. Furthermore, receiving timely payment within our agreed terms has become increasingly diffi cult. Smaller and medium-sized enterprises lack suffi cient protection and encounter numerous obstacles when it comes to receiving payment.”

Energy and the cost of living “The energy and cost of living

crises have had several eff ects on our business including increased operational costs and decrease in demand – such as HVAC maintenance, repairs or upgrades,” says Mr Wilkinson. “There has also been a shift in customer preferences as more clients seek sustainable options which has led to increased competition. “When the UK withdrew from the

EU there were several impacts on the HVAC sector, our business included. Factors such as supply disruptions with regards to lead times on parts and equipment, as well as increased costs which has ultimately aff ected pricing and profi tability. Brexit has also aff ected our business with regards to the skills and labour
