AIR QUALITY

encourage individual adaptation to conditions

■ Individual control over the thermal environment where g

windows, or using blinds practical, such as openin

■ Flexible working so people can work at more comfortable times ■ Availability of hot or cold drinks ■ Increased air movement (the cooling effect of local fans can be equivalent to reducing the operative temperature by around 2°C).

The internal temperature in any environment is intrinsically linked to the thermal comfort of occupants in the space, and their health and well-being and productivity. Yet, too often in many en vironments, little consideration is given to integration of the air conditioning with the rest of the space. In retail, this is particularly important. All retail businesses and

restaurants need strong aesthetics in today’s marketplace. Design, concept and style are major

sources of brand identity, customer expectation and economic value. So why do we see too many really poor examples of the integration of air conditioning in retail outlets? Too often, retailers think that air conditioning is simply doing a job and tolerate a simple, functioning box in the ceiling, yet just as retailers would not accept any old clothes rack or basic shop fixtures and fittings, they have every right to expect air con ditionin g equipment that gives them the ‘wow factor’.

The benefit of controls

Energy is 40% of the life costs and 50% of the running costs of a building. Managing these costs effectively requires controls. In the search for energy savings within a building, identification of wasted energy is the single largest way to reduce operating costs, cut CO2 emissions and deliver greener buildings. Data gathered from an effective monitoring system can

transform the way a building is run.

Clients and building occupiers, however, have failed to exploit advanced control solutions, says the BRE, because many of the innovative technologies they employ are perceived to be overly technical and complex to operate. This, when coupled with a lack of information on the subject, has resulted in a poor uptake of control technologies and a missed opportunity to provide a better environment for occupants and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of buildings.

However, Samsung’s DMS 2.5

Programmable Logic Controller, for instance, has the ability to connect and control third-party equipment via eight inputs and six outputs – providing what the manufacturer calls a ‘mini-BMS’ capability, which can also integrate with an existing BMS if the building has one.

There are many good examples of how logic controllers can help to target unnecessary energy

consumption and cut fuel bills and carbon emissions. How many times have you visited a shopping mall in the summer months only to find a store’s door curtain blasting out air as you enter?

Obviously, this is pretty

pointless on a hot summer’s day and a waste of energy. Often, staff do not know how to turn off equipment, although it is a simple task to integrate control of the door air curtain with control of an air conditioning unit via a logic controller.

Another example would be to use so-called ‘free’ cooling wherever possible. A typical retail unit may have two split system air conditioning units, combined with an air handling unit. Control logic can be applied to automatically bring in outside air via the air handling unit without using the air conditioning units when external conditions are favourable. This will have huge benefits for the retailer in terms of energy efficiency and runnin g costs.
