GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT
The 2017 Boating Season Sets Sail…
W
elcome to this edition of Fore and Aft, our first of the 2017 boating
season. I trust it will be a great year for all our members and look forward to seeing many of you.
I’m really interested to receive your thoughts or experiences regarding your customers changing boating habits to feed into our future customer project. The project is designed to identify what customers are likely to want from marinas in the future, will the majority still want to own boats or will chartering, shared ownership and casual boat usage become more prevalent? Many marinas that I have spoken
to are already seeing some changes immerging as their traditional customers grow older and new people access boating. The overriding view from
research and anecdote is that the habits and aspirations of younger generations worldwide are different. The 20th century culture of ownership is gradually morphing into the 21st century access culture, so what does that mean to marinas? It is clear from discussion with members that marinas in different parts of the world are seeing their market change in different ways

however one common factor is that the average age of our customers is increasing. TYHA is very involved in a British
Marine future boating customer project and therefore any insights you have on changes to your market would be greatly appreciated. Please email them to me on
jwhite@britishmarine.co.uk We are fortunate to have a very
supportive TYHA Council team providing support and guidance to our operations throughout these changing times, we are however always on the lookout for new members who can contribute to the focal areas of the organisation as shown on the graphic opposite. If you are interested in contributing then please consider putting yourself forward for nomination as a TYHA Council member. Information about this will be included in the TYHA AGM information which will be sent to you in early April, the AGM is in London on 10th May. During London Boat Show we
were very pleased to announce the 2017 Marina of the Year winners and runners up, also for the first- time we awarded Marina of Distinction to marinas who had been category finalists for 3 consecutive years. Congratulations to all finalists and marinas that were nominated.
Recently I was pleased to attend the final day of the Southampton (UK) Intermediate Marina Managers (IMM) course and listened to some very well thought through ‘best profit’ ideas for marinas visited during the course. There were some great ideas most of which capitalised on the wonderful surroundings that marinas enjoy by providing facilities that introduced new people to the marina environs. These ideas we’re greatly welcomed by the actual marina managers who will, I’m sure, be implementing some of them in the coming months.
My most important take away
from the course was the amazing sharing culture that we have in our industry with the largest marina groups happy to share ideas and innovation with other marinas large and small. In our changing world this
supportive culture will help us all adapt our businesses to match the needs of our future customer.
Good luck with all your activities and operations in 2017.
