THE GREE
BOAT WASH DOWN AND THE LAW
It’s a hot topic and something that is often raised when carrying out environmental audits.
30 FORE & AFT MARCH 2017
A boatyard in England has recently been visited by the Environment Agency and because they do not have an Environmental Permit they have been forced to stop washing down boats.
What regulations apply? If a commercial business discharges anything other than rainwater to the ground or a water body, a permit is required under the following regulations:
In England and Wales the regulations are The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010, in Scotland they are The Pollution Prevention and Control (Scotland) Regulations 2012.
If you are discharging to the foul sewer network then the Water Resources Act 1991 means that you will need a trade effluent consent from your sewerage provider.
