The range of vehicles which can accommodate a jetting machine has also increased drastically over the years, mainly due to the advances in technology and development within the drainage industry. Jetting machine manufacture has improved dramatically, with several factors influencing this such as engine and pump manufacture and lighter materials being used. Engines are quieter and more compact, which with weight restrictions, allows for more storage for accessories and equipment.


The industry has gone from heavy duty industrial style units to lightweight technically advanced products, with contractors now able to purchase small compact vehicles designed for inner city use which can also accommodate a jetting pack with the required performance.


An example of this change is with Jetchem’s recently launched compact petrol jetter which was designed for the busy inner city contractor. The main goal of the new design was an extremely lightweight unit which was compact enough for fitting in smaller van models such as the Ford Connect.


The 3,000 psi @ 8 gpm performance option (alternative performances are available) has an on the road weight of only 300 kg making it an ideal choice for smaller vehicles. Manufacturing a more compact and lightweight unit does not mean a compromise on features, with this particular model coming available with radio remote system, inlet hose reel, 275 litre water storage and the new LCD display.


Further developments within the industry have included the ability to provide ‘all in one packages’ in one ‘do it all’ vehicle, which gives the drainage contractor a wider variety of tasks available to the customer which also provides a cost saving. Van fit outs can now include a jetting pack in the rear with a CCTV or lining equipment pack in the central compartment. This not only saves time when having to survey before clearing a line, which in the past required two separate vehicles to do each job, but also saves cost which can then be passed on to the customer.


It is not only jetting packs which have seen improvements, internal finishing techniques means they are better equipped to deal with the rigors of day to day work. Van lining has moved on from simple woodpanelling to more high tech solutions. Spray on lining is now available which offers a durable and complete water-tight protection to the applied area. This is ideal for the rear areas of vans which house the jetting packs, protecting and prolonging the life of the van, but with many users choosing to also apply this to the rear and middle compartments which can house a wash down area or used to store equipment.


Advances in technology have also helped in areas that previously would have been difficult to work in or had an impact on the environment in an unwanted way. The remote hose reels and tracked utility vehicles are a prime example of how technology has improved the way
