‘Defining the scope was the most challenging area, as the scope of this project is huge compared to other projects Intertech has done in the past,’ Öngören believed. However, integration was straightforward until then, as ‘the IT environment is not that complex.’ The bank was also in the process of procuring an HR system as well as a card management and POS system. A plan between Albaraka and Intertech was also hatched to set up a new joint entity to market the Islamic version of Inter- face once the project had been completed. This was based on the hope that a handful more Islamic banks would open in Turkey in forthcoming years. ‘Our major focus is Albaraka Turk Bank and we will decide the roadmap after going live, but we have in our plans the intention to establish a new company,’ said Öngören. Intertech had already engaged with customers outside
of Turkey, including Denizbank in Austria and
Germany, although not other Islamic banks. However, it was expected that a few new Islamic banks would launch in Turkey in the near future. One example of this was Turkish Trade Bank, a conventional bank which was relaunching as Islamic in Q2 2014. This bank chose the Islamic offering from France-based SAB.

In 2013, Intertech was selected by its owner, Sberbank, for a
core banking project at Sberbank Austria (formerly Volksbank). It also won a deal in Turkey with Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ, which was upgrading its representative office in Istanbul to a full bank subsidiary. The bank duly opened on Inter-face at the end of November that year. A win for Intertech came from the German operations of
Ziraat Bank, which is a standalone subsidiary, Ziraat Bank International AG, with HQ in Frankfurt and eight branches across the country. Ziraat Bank International took Intertech’s core system, Inter-face, plus a range of auxiliary modules, such as data warehouse, MIS, BPM, scoring and decision engine, credit risk management, regulatory reporting (including the Turkish regulatory reporting set) and document management. The new software will replace the legacy Paba/Q solution from German developer
Actis.BSP, which was acquired by Temenos back in 2007. As well as its core banking offering Intertech houses solutions for customer relations management, business process management, business intelligence and channels.
