• Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and aspartate transaminase (ASP) tests evaluate liver function, which can be compromised in severe cases of eat- ing disorders.
• Above-normal levels result from substance abuse (including alcohol, drugs, or steroids); malnutrition; and hepatitis.
Box 4.16 Laboratory Test: Magnesium (Mg)
• Magnesium levels can be an indicator of kidney and gastro- intestinal function.
• Above-normal magnesium results from dehydration; laxative abuse; excessive use of over-the-counter antacids containing magnesium; hypothyroidism; and Addison’s disease.
• Below-normal magnesium results from inadequate dietary intake of magnesium; diuretic abuse; laxative abuse; alco- hol abuse; hypoparathyroidism; Crohn’s disease; inflam- matory bowel disease; celiac disease; surgery; burns; and pregnancy.
