At its most basic, eating disorder treatment involves a physician and/or psychiatrist, a registered dietitian (RD), and a mental health professional. This chapter addresses topics related to the coordination of care between the RD and other members of the treatment team and concludes with a brief discussion of reimbursement issues.
COMMUNICATING WITH OTHER PROVIDERS
During or prior to your initial nutrition assessment of the patient, obtain permission to communicate with other treatment providers (including providers you recom- mend). If you work in a facility, this permission may be handled on behalf of all providers at the time of admis- sion. If you work independently, you will need to gather permission releases along with names and contact infor- mation. Together with the patient and the patient’s family members, these providers and you comprise the treatment team. All members of the team should be included in major treatment decisions.
