Food and Nutrient Delivery Nutrition Interventions and Pharmacotherapy
INTRODUCTION
Healthy eating is the foundation for all eating disorder recovery (1,2). Therefore, although nutrition diagnoses for individuals with eating disorders vary from patient to patient (see Chapter 7), the goals of nutrition interventions tend to be similar. Box 8.1 lists long-term goals appropri- ate for almost all patients with eating disorders, regardless of eating disorder type (3–7). Registered dietitians (RDs) play a role in each of the long-term goals, with their great- est impact in the areas of improved nutritional status and “normalized” eating.
Box 8.1 Treatment Goals for Patients with Eating Disorders
• Medical/physical stability and physical/nutritional health within parameters of age and concurrent medical condition(s).
• “Normalized” (ie, neither abnormally restrictive nor exces- sive) eating, including variety, balance, and nutritional adequacy; ability to modify eating when needed without experiencing intense feelings of guilt or wrongdoing; ability to separate self-worth from nutritional intake.
