Broken Bones Paved the Way by Danielle Brock
Te Fellowship provided funds through the 2015 Convention Project to rebuild one of the Cessna aircraſt used to minister to the Tarahumara people of the Sierra Madre Range of Northwest Mexico. FEBC missionaries Bryon Brock and Tony Harmon (Crosspoint Bible Church, Oma- ha, Neb.) maintain the planes used by UIM Aviation.
Over ten years ago, a Tarahumara boy, Candelario, plummeted down a 120-foot drop
while herding his goats. His life was hanging by a thread at the bottom of the canyon. A lady saw him fall and ran to tell his father. Te next day a team of men began the gruel- ing task of transporting him to the Mexico Medical Mission Hospital; it was a 16-hour hike. Candelario underwent multiple surgeries over the next year to repair his shattered legs, but he suffered permanent damage. While Candelario received plates, screws, and a special orthopedic shoe, missionaries were working on his spiritual health. A PIONEERS® missionary who serves as a UIM Aviation pilot and his wife, a
Mexican doctor, provided care for Candelario in his village; they were the catalysts to an open door. A few years later the missionaries were invited to live in his village — this does not readily occur among the Tarahumara. Since then they have been working in the community, sharing the love of Christ, providing medical care and air transporta-
tion, and teaching the community how to read and write (picture on right). Te villag- ers even constructed an airstrip nearby, and Candelario continues to utilize the airplane for hospital visits. Te aviation ministry is important to the Tarahumara! Candelario began literacy training and studying chrono- logical Bible lessons as his interest in God grew. Even his father, Patricio, is learning the Bible lessons with him! Recently another door was opened as our pilot was able to care for Candelario’s
