Small-finds policy

The finds recovery policy would be addressed in the Method Statement for Archaeological Excavation, in line with the following basic principles:

All finds would be collected and processed, unless variations in this principle are agreed with EH and SCC during the course of excavations (including stages of Archaeological ‘Strip, Map and Record’ and watching brief).

• •

• •

• All artefacts would be retained from excavated contexts.

Metal detector searches would take place throughout excavations by an experienced metal detector user provided by the archaeological subcontractor. Sieving of occupation levels and building fills would be expected.

All ceramic finds should be processed concurrently with the excavation to allow immediate assessment and input into decision making.

In the case of twentieth century intrusions, sufficient artefacts would be retained to elucidate the date and function of the feature or deposit. If the field archaeologist is unsure as to the date of the context, all artefacts would be retained for further assessment.

173

Finds are the property of the landowner. The archaeological contractor would be required to fill in the sheet summarising any small finds made in each landholding, and communicating this to the landowner prior to completing works on site. This is to enable the tracking of the ownership of finds for accessioning after post-excavation, and to give the landowner information about what has been found during the work.

174

Contingency would be made for external specialist advice and conservation needs on- site should unexpected, unusual or extremely fragile and delicate objects be recovered. X-raying and storing of metalwork and other delicate objects would be undertaken by an appropriate external specialist facility.

1.11.6 175 Human remains

Proposals for the final disposition of remains following study and analysis would be required in the Method Statement for Archaeological Excavation. Any finds of human remains during the course of the Project would initially be left in situ, covered and protected. The archaeological subcontractor would notify the MWC and the Project Archaeologist. EAOW, SCC, EH and the Coroner would be notified by the Project Archaeologist.
