Landowner access is consented
Areas not suitable for archaeological evaluation include where the following conditions apply:
• •
• •
107 1.8.4 108
Previous land use will have resulted in wide-scale disturbance thereby removing archaeological potential, such as quarrying/extraction, landfill, woodland
Areas where topography indicates a low archaeological potential, such as steep slopes
Flood plains
Areas restricted by hazards, such as beneath overhead lines, or in the vicinity of buried services
Plots suitable for archaeological trial trenching are annotated on Figure 25.6.4. Methodology
A trench location plan will be produced by the Project Archaeologist, based on previous non-intrusive assessments, which will be provided to EH and SCC for approval in advance of the work.
109
Once the required mitigation or assessment (as appropriate) method has been determined at any particular location i.e. if the need for preservation in situ, advance/’set-piece’ excavation, or Archaeological ‘Strip, Map and Record’ is determined with certainty, and in consultation with EH and SCC, the trial trenching programme may be terminated at this defined location before all scheduled trial trenches have been excavated.
110
Archaeological trial trenching will be subject to site-specific method statements which will be provided to EH and SCC for approval in advance of the works. However, a generalised methodology is outlined as follows:
111
Trenches will be mechanically excavated using a machine, fitted with a toothless ditching bucket. Under instruction from the designated trench supervisor, ‘spits’ will be removed, c.50-200mm at a time. Upon reaching the archaeological horizon or the natural horizon, whichever is encountered first, the machine is moved back one arm’s reach and the process is repeated.
112
Any archaeological features will be hand excavated and recorded. Archaeological features will generally only be sampled sufficiently to characterise and date them.
