Archaeological field assessment and mitigation Objectives

The objectives of the programme of archaeological field assessments and mitigation are to:

• •

Identify any archaeological remains, in advance, that could be impacted throughout the course of the onshore electrical transmission construction works

Ensure the development and delivery of appropriate mitigation measures for all archaeological remains identified, where preservation in situ would be warranted and achievable; or else preservation by record (archaeological excavation) would be implemented

Prepare an archaeological archive of the site, that is reporting and publication of assessment and mitigation phases, including the treatment and preservation of any finds, deposition of the archive at an agreed repository or repositories, and the detailed analysis and publication of results to an appropriate level

Promote, where possible, community engagement with the historic environment, seeking to ensure that archaeological investigation is directed toward providing benefit to the public, whether directly through participation and engagement in the process where it is appropriate to do so or indirectly through the increase in knowledge that the results of investigation provide to the local and wider community. Community engagement fosters public understanding and support for the historic environment and adds value to development-led archaeological work. It may include providing talks and presentations, exhibitions, and open days

1.5.2 42 Embedded mitigation

The Environmental Statement, Volume 1, Chapter 3 outlines the process by which the finalised Onshore Cable Route was selected. ‘Embedded Mitigation’; Section 25.3.2 has previously ensured the avoidance of impacts to all designated heritage assets.

Subsequently, within the Preferred Onshore Cable Corridor, non-designated heritage assets were avoided by the refined Onshore Cable Route where possible. The Environmental Statement, Volume 6, Figure 25.1 identifies and illustrates avoidance of heritage assets within the 500m study area.
