of subsoil removed, therefore, would be under the direction of a suitably qualified archaeologist.
161
The site would be excavated and recorded according to accepted professional standards, by a qualified team of professionals, and in accordance with the site- specific method statement and relevant SCC guidance.
162
Features would be recorded and excavated stratigraphically and all relationships would be investigated. Sufficient of any archaeological features or deposits would be hand excavated in order to provide the information required:
•
A minimum of 50% of the fills of the general features would be excavated. In some instances 100% may be requested, depending on the nature of the feature/deposit.
•
10% of the fills of substantial linear features (ditches, etc) are to be excavated (min.). The samples must be representative of the available length of the feature and must take into account any variations in the shape or fill of the feature and any concentrations of artefacts. For linear features, 1.00m wide slots (min.) should be excavated across their width.
163 164
Metal detector searches would take place throughout excavations by an experienced metal detector user provided by the archaeological subcontractor.
Excavation record keeping would be consistent with relevant SCC guidance and thus be compatible with its HER archive. Methods would be specified in the Method Statement for Archaeological Excavation.
165
Plans of any archaeological features on the site are to be drawn at 1:20 or 1:50, depending on the complexity of the data to be recorded. Sections should be drawn at 1:10 or 1:20 again depending on the complexity to be recorded. All levels should relate to Ordnance Datum.
166
A photographic record of the work would be made, consisting of high resolution digital images (the image format and resolution should be specified in the Method Statement for Archaeological Excavation), and documented in a photographic archive.
167
On-site monitoring would be maintained by SCC and EH, and defined (i.e. fenced off) archaeological sites not given over to haul road construction/cable trenching until a site and records inspection has been carried out.
