122
A limited number of deeply stratified organic deposits, sufficient for the study of past environments, would be retrieved from areas of potential impact. These are anticipated to be predominantly located within HDD areas at river crossings.
1.9.4 123 Methodology
For any proposed geotechnical ground investigations, drilling teams would be briefed on the archaeological data requirements, as outlined in this WSI, so they can be incorporated into their scope of works.
124
All intrusive ground investigations will be three-dimensionally logged, relative to the OS grid, and such that accurate Ordnance Datum levels of below-ground strata can be calculated.
Desk-based review 125
Initially, the palaeoenvironmental assessment would include a review, by an appropriately qualified specialist, of trial pit and borehole logs taken during previous ground investigation work.
Field assessment
126 Where buried land surfaces and/or organic strata are identified, or in areas that have not been previously assessed by intrusive ground investigations, intrusive archaeological investigations (undertaken, where possible, in conjunction with other intrusive investigations) will define the areas of archaeological interest/potential thorough a systematic auger transect programme.
127
The precise scope of the intrusive field assessment will be defined in a site-specific method statement composed by a suitably qualified specialist, following the desk- based review, and provided to EH and SCC for approval in advance of the works.
Mitigation 128
Anticipated direct impacts within identified areas of palaeoenvironmental and archaeological potential would be mitigated through preservation in situ where warranted and achievable, or preservation by record (archaeological excavation), as appropriate.
129
The appropriate methods for assessment and/or mitigation will be determined through consultation with EH and SCC following completion of the field assessment stage. These consultations may, for the sake of consistency, include the area of the foreshore/intertidal zone.
