MANAGEMENT IN AVIATION HISTORY BENCH MARKS LANDING ON GRASS JOHN LIVINGSTON [1897-1974].


There is no doubt about it. The annual EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI, is a big, big deal! Thousands of visitors from all over the world arrived between July 24th and July 30th this year to mingle with like- minded aviation enthusiasts. After years of attending the sprawling acres of “everything-airplane” even the most jaded of veterans return. One of my friends specifi cally drove hundreds of miles for the chance to tour the Martin Mars water bomber which was anchored at Oshkosh’s Seaplane Base. Other pals fl ew commercial aircraft across the country to spend days at the Pioneer Airport Hanger. Oshkosh is in constant motion from dawn’s fi rst fl ights to the fi nal chords of an evening concert. Since 1992, encouraging children to explore and enjoy fl ying has been the goal of the nation-wide Young Eagles program which welcomed a teen-age girl in July as their two-millionth fl ier. On hand to commemorate the occasion was the former Chairperson of the Young Eagles program [2004- 2009] Harrison Ford, who gave the lucky young lady a memorable fl ight over the AirVenture fi elds in his deHavilland Beaver. There truly is something for


everyone, including a special area where pilots and owners of antique aircraft congregate to share practical tips on maintenance, and plenty of “hangar-fl ying” stories. As exciting as AirVenture is,


many private pilots consider their main event of the year to be the more intimate Annual Antique Airplane Invitational Fly-In which is traditionally held about a month following AirVenture, at the Antique Airfi eld near Blakesburg, IA. [This
