Buyers report sharp rise in sharing economy use
THERE HAS BEEN A SHARP RISE in buyers including sharing economy providers in their travel policy. A study of 178 travel buyers from the Business Travel Show reveals more than 28 per cent are using services such as Uber and Airbnb, compared to 8 per cent in 2015. The study showed one of the main reasons behind the take-up are cost and choice. However, a quarter of buyers still maintain the sharing economy is a threat thanks to the potential impact on traveller tracking and security.

ITM announces next chairman
THE INSTITUTE OF TRAVEL MANAGEMENT (ITM) has announced EY travel buyer Karen Hutchings will replace Mark Cuschieri as chairman from May 2017. Upon completion of his two-year term as ITM chairman, Cuschieri will hand over the reins at the ITM annual conference in May this year.
Etihad and Lufthansa sign codeshare deal
ETIHAD AND LUFTHANSA HAVE ANNOUNCED a codeshare agreement.
The deal will see the German airline
place its ‘LH’ code on Etihad’s daily non-stop flights between Abu Dhabi, and Frankfurt and Munich. The UAE’s national airline will, in turn,
put its ‘EY’ code on Lufthansa’s long-haul, intercontinental services between Frankfurt, the business and commercial capital of Germany, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as well as Bogota, Colombia.
A ‘wet-lease’ deal between Lufthansa Group and Airberlin – in which Etihad holds a 29 per cent stake – was also confirmed. Lufthansa’s point-to-point carrier Eurowings and Austrian Airlines have signed an agreement to wet lease 38 aircraft from Airberlin, 33 of which are to be operated for the Eurowings Group, with an additional five aircraft are being flown for Austrian Airlines.
The agreement has a term of six years and becomes effective from February, subject to any regulatory requirements.
POWER SHIFTING TO BUYERS IN MICE
MARKET – STUDY THE BALANCE OF POWER WILL SHIFT from sellers to buyers this year in the global MICE market, according to the IBTM annual trends report. The study points to a “quiet optimism” towards global economic performance despite the “turbulent geopolitical and economic environment”. The 12th edition of the
report makes forecasts for the sector’s performance in 2017 and analyses the major trends in the global MICE industry for 2016.
AIRLINES
It showed that for global meetings and events this year, cost per attendee per day will rise 3 per cent in Asia-Pacific, stay flat in Europe and rise 3-5 per cent in North America. Latin America will see a fall of 10 per cent.
Report author Rob Davidson said: “Given this year’s political rollercoaster, with the result of the EU referendum and the US election, there is a strong probability that in 2017 our industry will be once more
obliged to show that it is capable of prospering in the face of new challenges, some of them as yet unknown. “We are much better placed to respond to these challenges now than at any other time in our history. Our industry is now robustly underpinned by widespread professionalism and a sound education and training system that supports the industry’s existing and future professionals.”
