Right: Clariant says its PV Fast Yellow H4G is a safe and economic

alternative to

lead chromate pigments

silver-white pearl lustre pigment. The latest introductions from Clariant are focused on

regulatory compliance and environmental benefits. PV Fast Yellow H4G is described as a safe and economic alternative to lead chromate pigments offering good opacity, light and weather fastness and high colour strength. It is compliant with relevant FDA and EU regulations and is expected to find application in a range of consumer applications. The pigment is also available as a preparation for PVC – Hostaprint Yellow H4G 34. PV Fast Pink E is a quinacridone pigment based on

bio-succinic acid that offers the bright coloration required for everyday products ranging from toys to food packaging. The use of bio-succinic acid synthesised from natural plant sugars reduces Clariant’s carbon footprint by up to 90% compared to production using petrochemical-based products. The company is also playing a part in improving the recycling of plastic packaging items. Its Polysynthren Black H pigment is infrared transparent, allowing articles pigmented with it to be sorted in typical automated recycling installations (carbon black pigments can present considerable problems for infrared sorting systems).

Industry matters Huntsman recently commenced operations at its new colour pigments facility in Augusta, Georgia, US. The company says it has invested more than $172m in the development of the new production plant, which it claims is the first of its kind to be built in North America for more than 35 years. The new site has the capacity to produce 30,000 tonnes of yellow, red and black iron oxide pigments per annum. The facility will serve as the North American hub for Huntsman’s global pigments and additives business, which employs more than 4,500 people worldwide. The company says the plant features a high level of automa- tion in process operations and in packaging and says it is innovative in its use of raw materials. The material supply chain has, for instance, been closely integrated with Huntsman’s wider pigments and additives business. This enables the Augusta business to use iron sources obtained from waste streams at other plants as inputs. Careful infrastructure and asset planning has also elimi- nated a drying step that is normally present at a stand-alone pigments production plant. European pigment manufacturer Cappelle Pigments

has formed a number of new partnerships to serve the North American market in order to improve its pres- ence and continued growth in the region. Cappelle is continuing its long term partnership with Strauch Chemical Distributors (its representative in the upper Midwest territory) and in Canada, it is represented by

Azelis Canada, formerly the Unipex group. New North American distributors include: EM Sullivan Associates for the east coast; Dowd and Guild for the west coast; D&F Distributing in the southern US; and Chem-Materi- als Company in the Midwest. Meanwhile, in Europe Ferro and IMCD have rein-

forced their current distribution partnership in Den- mark, Finland, Norway and Sweden for Ferro pigments used in plastics and other applications. In addition to the current inorganic pigments from Nubiola - ultrama- rines, iron oxides, zinc ferrites, corrosion inhibitors, chrome oxide greens and bismuth vanadates - IMCD is now supplying heat stable and weather resistant Complex Inorganic Color Pigments (CICP) from Ferro to the Nordic region. Nubiola was acquired by Ferro in July 2015. The consolidation of CICP and Nubiola pigments portfolio distribution in selected partners around EMEA is part of Ferro’s strategy to combine the strengths of both CICP and Nubiola brands under Ferro Pigments.
