The ongoing drive for stability Today’s increasingly demanding

Market demands for polymer stabilisers are becoming increasingly complex for compounders as downstream processors and brand owners call for enhanced performance, lower in-use cost together with regula- tory compliance across the diverse market segments they serve, according to Dr Irfaan Foster, Global Business Development Manager, Performance Materials at Addivant. “This is true in diverse segments from wire and cable to under-the-hood automotive applications, from building and construction to electrical and electronics. For example, in North America, Europe and Japan there is a radical change in transportation taking place - more hybrid and electrical cars, compact and durable batteries, greater light- weighting, demanding fuel standards and smaller engines. This all leads to greater demands on the plastics employed. In such a dynamic and performance driven market, compounders need to constantly strive to find new polymer stabilisation solutions to fulfil increasingly demanding market needs,” he says. “Furthermore we see a greater degree of specialisa- tion and operational efficiency with compounders, as they work to maximise their operations to keep them flexible with the overall lowest costs. Consequently, as compounders focus on optimising their operations, they

market needs and applications are pushing compounders towards new high performance thermal and UV stabilisation solutions, writes Mark Holmes

are increasingly looking for polymer stabiliser suppliers to bring them the innovation to drive differentiation and meet the end-user needs,” Foster says. For companies such as Addivant, he says this requires working with compounders to understand their needs and then to develop new formulated solutions that address those needs in terms of enhanced thermal and colour stability, improved recycling and lower waste, greater durability and productivity, better outdoor weatherabil- ity and fastness. Foster also explains that as regulatory bodies

actively tighten up migration limits on components of items such as packaging for food contact applications,
