need to be not only compliant today but also future proof.” Foster says that in the wire and cable industry, for

example, cable companies require the highest quality and reliability of raw materials to enable their next generation cables to meet new standards. “At the same time, cable producers are looking for higher productivity and faster throughput to optimise their operations to be competitive and to meet customer demands for lower life-cycle costs requiring new antioxidants,” he says. “Compounders are limited in the availability of

for example, consumers are demanding increasing transparency around their use. As a consequence, antioxidant solutions are called for that surpass global regulatory standards, allowing food packaging compa- nies to stay ahead of the industry curve and giving compounders peace of mind. “Over the last couple of years, the Chinese polymer

industry has changed dramatically with significant expansion overseas combined with a rapid move towards more value added solutions,” he says. “In some cases, Chinese legislation is becoming stricter than in other regions of the world. One example is emission standards for new vehicles, where China is implement- ing stricter legislation than other regions to ensure that new car vehicle emissions are significantly lower to minimise impact on health, safety and the environment. Such legislative changes are driving the whole value chain to develop new polymer solutions which meet the needs, with compounders having a pivotal role.”

cable industry continues to demand more of stabiliser producers

Global support As processors and brand owners become increasingly international, compounders are also required to support them globally. “Compounders need to have additive suppliers with a global footprint and supply security to ensure they meet the levels of service and quality required by their customers,” Foster explains. “However, more important still is the ability to have antioxidant and UV stabiliser solutions that are compliant with all the existing specific national legislations in place - guaranteeing peace of mind. In a very dynamic regula- tory world, changes occur frequently and so antioxidants and UV stabilisers used by compounders

suitable and effective antioxidant solutions which provide high efficiency and productivity allied with excellent mechanical properties to ensure cable longevity required by the utility companies. Existing solutions interact with the peroxide, leading to lower mechanical properties and lower productivity. More widely in building and construction, traditional bromi- nated flame retardants are being phased out and being replaced by a new generation of polymeric flame retardants in XPS (extruded polystyrene) applications. The implementation of the new flame retardants requires new antioxidant solutions to protect the polymer structure during processing and to ensure good colour stability of the end article,” he says. Other industry sectors also require specific polymer

stabilisation solutions, according to Addivant. “In the automotive industry, smaller cars and engines require greater thermal stability of the plastic parts to with- stand the higher operating or peak temperatures. Furthermore, within transportation increasingly OEMs and consumers are demanding more sustainable solutions with lower emissions and odour, without com- promising the technical performance,” says Foster. “Today, consumers and food brands are increasingly

paying attention to both nonylphenol and the Non- Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS), which are com- pounds created during the production and use of packaging materials. Consumers and brand owners are looking for compounders and the whole value chain to supply antioxidant solutions which are compliant with the new needs,” he explains.

Packaging solutions Addivant is developing next gen- eration solid and liquid phosphite antioxidants to provide food packaging polymer solutions that will satisfy future consumer and brand owner requirements. In addition, the company is launching speciality
