additives including antioxidants, thermal stabilisers, UV stabilisers, acid neutralisers, clarifiers, nucleators and processing aids without using conventional binders and without melting any components. According to SI Group, niche applications for speciality polyolefins and inter-material substitution of plastic resins means there is a growing trend for selecting additive combina- tions in the automotive, appliance, construction and packaging markets. It cites the example of bi-axially oriented polypropyl- ene (BOPP) film production, where it has developed its ALBlend 925 package to provide improved melt flow and colour stability at higher processing temperatures. This blend is said to have shown improved stabilisation of BOPP film resins, helping to maintain melt viscosity stability during film conversion, orientation and stretching as well. This helps prevent web breakage, allowing a broader processing window. SI Group has also


introduced the S Series ALBlends. These have been shown to provide

better melt flow and colour stability at half the concen- tration of generic one-packs. In addition, Long Term Thermal Stability (LTTS) tests have demonstrated better thermal stability for polypropylene formulated with S Series. SI Group adds that it has also developed ALBlends containing Ethanox 330, a hindered phenolic antioxidant for stabilisation of bimodal HDPE resins used in plastic pipes for water, oil and gas transport. The company says Ethanox 330 also exhibits superior extraction resistance with polypropylene resins used in hot and cold water pipe applications.


Lightweighting options To meet the lightweighting plastics compounding needs of the automotive industry, Songwon has developed SongXtend 2124. The company says the development of lighter weight parts with reduced wall thickness is resulting in an increased demand for glass fibre reinforced polypropylene (GF-PP). SongXtend 2124 has been developed to provide long-term thermal stability (LTTS) of these new GF-PP compounds, offering the LTTS levels of more than 1000 hours at 150°C that the market is currently demanding. In collaboration with Sabo, Songwon is also launch- ing the Sabo Stab UV 229 50PP light stabiliser for automotive compounds. Songwon says the new additive offers the same light stability performance as Sabo Stab

UV 228 50PP (launched in 2013 and which provided improved light stability at lower concentrations and lower VOC emissions and fogging) but offers additional cost advantages. Other stabiliser developments from Songwon include


SongXtend 1301, which has been designed to protect new polymeric flame retardants (pFR) in extruded polystyrene (XPS) applications. The company says that this second generation stabiliser for this market maintains better molecular weight and colour of XPS containing pFR, as well as offering a broader processing window compared with existing stabilisers. SongXtend 1141 has been introduced for PP fibre resins, which have similar requirements in terms of colour preserva- tion as BOPP film resins. The additive offers good gas fading resistance and is primarily designed for use in certain BOPP film segments where colour is critical. The company says the additive improves the initial colour of the resin and helps maintain it throughout the conversion process. Lanxess’s Rhein Chemie Additives business has


expanded its range of hydrolysis stabilisers for plastics and polyurethanes with the addition of Stabaxol P 110, the first product in a new line of low-emission polymeric carbodiimides based on alternative raw materials. The company says that Stabaxol P 110, as with the other new carbodiimides, is a customised anti-hydrolysis agent that is tailor-made for use in individual applica- tions and offers improvements in stabilisation perfor- mance, toxicology, emissions and handling. Stabaxol P110 is claimed to show good performance in PET and PBT, as well as TPEs, while its use in PLA leads to a significant extension of the service life of the final article under moist and warm operating condi- tions. Stabaxol P 110 is supplied in pellet form or as an easy-flowing powder. The company says it is easily processed as it does not have to be pre-heated, it offers a high softening point of 80°C and is easy to meter uniformly. Typical applications include monofilaments for paper machine screens, cable sheathing, engineer- ing injection mouldings and electronic housings. Brüggemann Chemical has introduced Brüggolen TP-H1606, a non-discolouring copper complex-based heat stabiliser for polyamides with significantly im- proved long-term stabilisation over a broad temperature range. The antioxidant is a non-dusting blend which is easy to handle and process and allows an improved alternative to phenolic-based stabiliser blends as it greatly extends the exposure time especially in the low to medium temperature range, where phenolic blends have represented the industry standard. The company has also developed Brüggolen TP-C1608 for AP-Nylon cast polyamides - a new heat stabiliser that raises the
