event preview | Polymer Testing & Analysis Artifi cial weathering

tests will be the subject of a presentation by Dr Florian Feil of Atlas Material Testing Solutions

Improving polymer analysis The penultimate session of the conference will focus on improving polymer analysis techniques with three practical presentations on different techniques and applications. First up will be a presenta- tion on selected analytical methods for proving the presence of recycled polymers in plastic samples. This will be delivered by Dr Jiˇ

rí Samsonek,

director of the testing division at Institut Pro Testovaní A Certifi kaci, the Czech Institute for Testing and Certifi cation. The next talk will be on the interesting subject of

analysing additives in polymers, from simple to complex chemistries. The expert speaker covering this topic will be Vincent Jeanguyot, who is manager of the analytical laboratories at Intertek (Schweiz), the Swiss operation of the global testing and certifi cation organisation. Concluding the polymer analysis session, will be Dr

Ute Potyka, product specialist GCMS/LCMS at Shimad- zu Europe, a leading supplier of analytical and measur- ing instruments including chromatographs. She will discuss pyrolysis-GCMS technology and the latest polymer analysis applications.

Understanding why plastics fail The fi nal session of the conference will focus on the critical issues of understanding mechanical properties and why plastics fail. It will begin with a presentation by Dr Carole Raymond, research fellow at the materials department at Loughborough University in the UK. She will discuss novel analytical techniques for polymer and product analysis.

Dr Lucien Laiarinandrasana, senior researcher at Mines Paristech in France will follow with a talk on

carrying out tensile tests on thermoplastic polymers. This presentation will focus specifi cally on spherulitic deformation at necking. The conference sessions will be

concluded by Prof.Dr.-Ing Volker Altstädt, head of the polymer engineering department at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. His paper will be on hysteresis measurements to monitor the non-linear mechanical deforma- tion behaviour of polymers during fatigue loading.

Exhibition displays In between the conference sessions, attendees will be able to visit company displays in the exhibition area. This is already fi lling up with a range of suppliers booking their exhibition spaces. At the time of writing, they include: Brabender; Datacolor; Dr Collin; Elasto- con; GUT Environmental Technologies; Hunterlab; Metrastat; Perkin Elmer; PSS Polymer Standards Service; Shimadzu; and Sikora.
