Fraunhofer LBF studies halogen-free recycling

The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability & System Reliability has launched a new research project examining recycling of halogen-free flame retardant plastics, which it says is an essential programme given that the EU target for plastic waste recycling will rise to 70% in 2020. The research will be carried out as part of a project funded by the Industrial Community Research of the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations and includes member companies of the Phosphorus, Inorganic & Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association (PINFA). The focus is on these three types of formulations, which account

waste alone at €150m. The institute says the

companies involved will benefit immediately. “They will be better able to use their own product waste in the case of flame-retardant formulations and to save costs,” it said in a statement.

“The findings will lead to

for about 70% of halogen-free flame retardant consumption in Europe and a market value of about €3bn. The institute estimates potential annual cost savings from using production

enhanced quality products with high safety standards, potential hazards of degrada- tion products will be identified and can be eliminated. Competitive advantages will continue to exist for using recycled plastics as a market- ing tool and for constructing new products based on them,” according to the institute. ❙ www.lbf.fraunhofer.de

Holland buys in South America

North American resin distributor M Holland Company is to acquire Able International Corp and Tril Export Corp, both of which are head- quartered in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Able International is the leading resin

distributor in Puerto Rico; Tril International is

the leading resin distributor in the Caribbean and also serves customers in Central and South America. The two businesses sell about 50m pounds of thermoplastic resins annually, according to M Holland. ❙ www.mholland.com

Nanopack project results out

Results from the second stage of the Nanopack project in Spain have been announced, showing, it is claimed, that nanoparticles can improve the proper- ties of cosmetic packaging plastics and potentially other applications with high performance requirements. The 24-month project was co-funded

by Valencian Institute for Business Competitiveness ( IVACE) and the European Regional Development Fund

with participation from the plastics technology centre Aimplas and the AINIA Technology Centre in Valencia. The project particularly looked at nanoclays and metallic oxides, conclud- ing that nanocomposites containing them can enable replacement of multi-layer materials with mono-layers, while also providing high gas barriers and improved mechanical and thermal properties. ❙ www.aimplas.es

news in brief

❙ Petlon Polymers has expanded its portfolio of Beetle engineering thermo- plastic compounds for the European market. Managing Director Mark Clayton said the company is now offering “a product range that is broader and more globalised than ever, providing custom- ers with an unlimited choice of custom formulations based on PA, PET and PBT”. The move follows Petlon’s acquisition in August last year of the Beetle engineer- ing thermoplastics brand from Teknor Apex. ❙ www.petlon.co.uk

❙ Plastic Compounders (PCI) moved into a new $3.5m facility at Cambridge, Ohio at the end of last year. The 6,300 m2

plant provides additional

manufacturing and ware- house space. An additional five people have been recruit- ed, bringing the total to 35. PCI offers custom com- pounded resins, reprocessed pellets and custom blending. It also offers toll compound- ing. Sales are about $8m a year. www.plasticcompounders.net
