event preview | Compounding World Congress 2016

New addition to the panel discussion

The line-up for the panel discussion on the fi rst day of conference sessions is now complete. As we reported last month, the panel of industry leaders from across Europe will discuss ‘strategies for growing a profi table compounding business in an increasingly competitive global marketplace’. Dr Oliver Neuss, who is director of

technology and innovation EMEA at leading global compounder A. Schulman, will join the discussion about a range of strategic issues. These will include: globalisation; developing new markets; maximising

The panel discussion at last year’s

Compounding World Congress generated lots of interest

margins; regulatory issues; improving sustainability; and the changing role of compounders in the plastics supply chain. The previously announced panellists

are: Massimo Pavin, CEO of Sirmax, the Italian-headquartered compounder that has been growing rapidly in recent years;

Developments in conductive compounds The second session on the fi nal day will focus on technologies for adding electrical and thermal conduc- tivity to plastics. Compounding World’s regular articles on such technologies always attract high levels of interest, and the dedicated sessions on these themes at our previous Compounding World conferences in Europe, America and Asia have all proved very popular. Dr Klaus Reinartz, director marketing LED EMEA at Covestro, will open the session with a talk on thermally conductive polycarbonates, focusing particularly on electronic applications. Adding thermal conductivity to thermoplastics is opening up promising opportunities for replacing cast aluminium and other materials in areas such as LED lighting.

The next paper will be on a new generation of additives for increasing the thermal conductivity of plastics while maintaining good mechanical and fl ow properties. It will be given by Péter Sebö who is development manager at HPF The Mineral Engineers, a division of the Quarzwerke Group in Germany. The fi nal presentation before lunch on Wednesday 20 April will be given by Daniela Sordi, chief technology offi cer at Carbon X, which started as a spin-off company from the University of Delft to commercialise a new porous carbon material. Her talk will explore how this can be used to add electrical and thermal conduc- tivity to plastics.

Speakers lined up for the fi rst day of conference sessions at Compounding World Congress 2016 include (from top to bottom): Veronica Mayer, Elisa Conte, Klaus Reinartz, Péter Sebö, and Daniela Sordi

52 COMPOUNDING WORLD | March 2016

Hanna Ristola, managing director of Premix, the Finland-based compounder that has built up a leading position in electrically conductive polymer technolo- gies; and Murat Cansever, who is managing partner (technical) at the Turkish engineering plastics compounder Eurotec.

Making the most of compounding lines The fi nal afternoon of the conference will feature an extended session with six speakers covering a range of different ways to optimise the operation of compound- ing lines. Corrado Moneta, who is technical sales manager at Italian twin-screw extruder manufacturer ICMA San Giorgio, will open the session with a talk on practical methods to improve energy effi ciency levels in compounding plants. He will be followed by Kenji Inagawa, process engineer at Japan Steel Works (JSW) Europe, who will discuss how to reduce VOC levels in automotive compounds by optimising devolatilisation in the twin-screw extrusion process. The next presentation will focus on complete plant engineering for compounding lines, including materials handling systems. It will cover four different concepts based on practical examples and will be delivered by Thomas Stegmeier, sales manager for plastics processing applications at Azo. Materials handling systems will also be the focus for

a presentation by Martin Skrabak, area sales manager at Penta, the designer and manufacturer of large-scale materials handling and storage systems that is now part of the Piovan Group. In particular, his talk will examine sustainable solutions. Twin-screw extruder manufacturers have been busy

increasing the torque levels and free volumes of their high-end machines in recent years. Dr-Ing Thomas Winkelmann, head of development plastics technology at KraussMaffei Berstorff will discuss which is more important – more torque or more volume? The conference will conclude with a presentation by
