high-end polymers in gears,” says Andrew. “Gears may look quite simple, but the complexity of producing them is huge. We can generate momentum in the market, make the whole pie bigger. Everybody will benefi t.” Victrex has also worked closely on refi ning such

processing technologies as hybrid moulding with continuous fi bre composites and injection moulding around fusible cores for hollow parts, particularly for aerospace applications. And it is collaborating with downstream partners in the medical and dental fi elds, via its specialist subsidiaries Invibio Biomaterial Solutions and Juvora Dental Innovations. More than six million people around the world have, for example, been fi tted with PEEK-Optima Invibio spinal implants. Evonik produces PEEK in China through its Jida

Evonik High Performance Polymers 90:10 joint venture with Jilin University, and produces compounds in Germany and Japan (the latter in a joint venture with Daicel). Key Account Manager Frank Lorenz says the company has a full order book, with annual growth in double-digits, much of it coming through metal replacement. He says the company has plans to raise

Performance Polyamides 2016

Compounding World publisher Applied Market Information is launching a brand new conference - Performance Polyamides 2016 – to examine the latest advances in PA resins and compounds for demanding applications in automotive, E&E, medical, consumer and industrial applications. Taking place in Cologne, Germany, on 8-9 June 2016, the event will cover all polyamide chemistries from PA6 to PPA. To fi nd out more, visit the conference website.

polymerisation capacity in the 2017/8 time frame. In the meantime, it has been debottlenecking its existing plant, which has enabled it to raise capacity by around 25% (although he does not divulge the specifi c capacity). “Not all PEEK is the same,” says Lorenz. He claims that some Evonik grades are capable of elongation as much as 20% greater than rival commercial grades. He also says that Evonik’s 5000 grade, with its high viscosity, is unique among the various PEEKs on the market.

Celanese also announced this month it will intro-

duce two high fl ow PEEK grades next year, which it will market alongside its Vectra LCP and Fortron PPS polymers. The new fl ow-modifi ed grades will be compounded in the US and marketed globally, accord- ing to the company.
