HLP study trip Spain 2016 (1)
Since the foundation of the Hessische Landwirtschaftgruppe Pilzanbau (HLP), the annual trip to visit international colleagues has become a tradition. A tradition only truly becomes a tradition if it is repeated, so in September, our destination - just like 2005 - was Spain.

T 34 MUSHROOM BUSINESS
here are two regions in Spain with the largest concentration of mushroom, and oyster mushroom, growers; one in the Rioja region around Logrono, and the other in the region between the cities of Cuenca and Albacete (autonomous community of Castilla La Macha), some 250 kilometres south east of Madrid. The background to this regional concentration originates in the fact that mushroom growing in Spain is organised around cooperatives that produce the raw materials for their members. Virtually all mushroom growers in Spain are members of a cooperative that also runs company supplying the raw material. The majority of developments centre on these companies.
An interesting programme was put together under the inspirational guidance of Ulrich Groos, assisted by Jorge Calvo, Sylvan advisor in Spain, and exotic specialist. It combined the best of both worlds; educative value and pleasure. Around 20 participants from a wide variety of backgrounds joined the trip.
After arriving in Bilbao, the meeting point, on Monday 19 September, the journey continued by coach to La Rioja. As well as its claim to fame as a mushroom growing region, La Rioja is of course famous for its fantastic wines. And, not entirely uncoincidentally, the traditional annual wine harvest festival happened to be in the same week in Logronjo. It would have been rude not to take a peek…
