The Times..

A National Climate Summit was recently held in the Netherlands. The aim was to translate the goals agreed in Paris in 2015 into more concrete action. The agreed measures include the launch of a CO2

Smart Grid, creating more gas-free housing and concluding new agreements on energy saving. Two political parties also presented an initiative to introduce national climate legislation, in which

they want to embed the goal of reducing CO2 emissions to virtually zero in 2050. Major and, in many ways, essential steps towards a circular bio-based economy are imminent. Prior to the summit, the CEOs of around forty multinationals, including Shell and Heineken, urged the government to accelerate the energy transition to prevent climate change, and see this as an opportunity to develop a new, viable and profitable economy. They also expect a greater sense of vision from the government: a binding, multi-year policy that transcends the boundaries of individual cabinet formations and gives companies a compass on which to base their investments in a sustai- nable future. Some say this is loud proclaiming by companies that had (or have) scant regard for sustainability and the environment anyway, but you can just as well argue, that big capital has seen the writing on the wall.

Let’s switch our focus to Gemert, where Economy Minister Kamp opened the spent mushroom compost upcycling plant run by the Van den Boomen family (see page 14). There, on this mechanical mushroom farm, without needing any climate summits or election programmes, they simply sat down and thought of a way to reduce the costly flow of smc. The result is profitable for the company, the sector, the neighbours and the environment. Like other Dutch mushroom farms and the horticulture sector before them, they successfully aim for energy neutral producing and zero emissions.

MUSHROOM BUSINESS 3

People want to drive a Tesla these days. The energy revolution is here, and fossil fuel will soon fade into history, although not every politician - or ‘presidential’ candidate for that matter - seems to grasp this. To paraphrase the latest American Nobel Prize winner: ‘You better start swimmin’ or you sink like a stone’.
