In Ireland, you must give at least three months’ notice before getting married. Is this a good idea or does it ruin the romance of being in love? Should lovers wait to get to know each other better before marrying or is love alone enough to justify marriage? Do relationships progress differently in modern Irish society when compared to the society of Romeo and Juliet? In pairs: - Discuss this talking point and offer your own views on this idea. Jot down any conclusions you reach.


- Discuss this statement in terms of Romeo and Juliet. Having only met the night before, Romeo is now arranging their wedding. Is this too impetuous (acting too quickly)? Write down your ideas.


As a class: - Listen as some of the pairs report back to the class. - Hands up if you agree. Having discussed this talking point, the class should show by raising their hands if they agree with the talking point: If you are in love, you can never get married too quickly.


D: LiTeRaRy DeViCe - PeRsOnIfIcAtIoN


Personification is when non-human things are given human qualities. It is a type of metaphor that helps to develop and enrich an idea. For example: The old floorboards groaned as we walked across them or The leaves danced in the light summer breeze. Friar Laurence uses personification in this scene, particularly in his opening soliloquy. You can explore the use of personification in your Portfolio.


E: ThInGs To ThInK AbOuT


} Friar Laurence is presented as a knowledgeable man. He is shown gathering herbs and reflects on the potential of plants to do both harm and good. Friar Laurence compares this to humanity’s capacity for good and evil.


} Friar Laurence is a respected figure. Romeo seeks his help in this scene; similarly, Friar Laurence’s advice is sought by a number of characters later in the play.


} Romeo is characterised as passionate but changeable by Friar Laurence. He criticises Romeo for ‘doting’ on Rosaline and then quickly forgetting her.


} Romeo is shown to be impetuous as he rushes to arrange his marriage to Juliet, having only met her the night before. Friar Laurence advises him to act with greater caution: ‘Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast’.


} Friar Laurence sees Romeo and Juliet’s love as a way of creating peace between the two families: ‘For this alliance may so happy prove, / To turn your households’ rancour to pure love.’
