} Romeo’s suffering is fully expressed in this scene. He considers his exile from Verona as a punishment worse than death: ‘banished’ / Is death mis-termed’ and feels that life is not worth living without Juliet.


} Romeo’s desperation and excessive passion is evidenced by his threat to kill himself. Tis foreshadows the end of the play.


} Although Friar Laurence expresses little sympathy for Romeo, he shows himself to be a good friend by proposing a plan whereby Romeo can be reunited with Juliet. However, it is also in the Friar’s personal interest to bring calm to the situation as he is the one who married Romeo and Juliet in the first place.


} Te Friar is relying on enough time to pass before he can announce the marriage, reconcile the families and beg a pardon from the Prince. However, as the play proceeds, the audience sees that time is something that Romeo and Juliet lack.
