HEALTHCARE HYGIENE
washing removes the microorganisms – and the spores – from the hands.
Therefore it makes sense for hospitals to provide the right tools to promote optimum hand hygiene among staff, patients and visitors. There should be plenty of hand wash stations plus a continuous supply of mild soaps and soft hand towels. Gentle products will prevent the problem of chapping and soreness that can occur when healthcare staff wash their hands frequently, while also being a user- friendly option for patients and visitors.
Tork Extra Mild foam and liquid soaps, for example, are particularly suitable for frequent use since they help to protect the hands from dryness, particularly when used in conjunction with a moisturising lotion. Tork Soft Singlefold Hand Towels have been designed to provide a gentle and effective hand dry and are highly popular in UK hospitals.
Good hand hygiene should be second nature to anyone who works in a hospital. However, the message is still not getting through – sometimes with fatal results.
The inquiry into the Vale of Leven hospital outbreak concluded that a lack of hand basins and commodes was among the reasons for the 2007- 2008 epidemic. Contributory factors in the Portiuncula Hospital outbreak of C Diff were also listed as poor hand hygiene compliance and deficiencies in cleaning resources.
And according to one tragic news report, a patient at Glan Clwyd Hospital where the Welsh outbreak occurred had actually berated hospital staff for their hand hygiene lapses before her C Difficile-related death in 20132
.
Sniffer dogs, frozen faeces and new drugs may well be tomorrow’s answer to fighting C Difficile infections. In the meantime, however, good hand hygiene education – plus facilities that allow staff, visitors and patients to wash their hands effectively – can make a real difference today.
