I’m from Boston and I have lived in Ireland for 12 years.
I rent a house boat from a friend for the winter and live on it in Grand Canal Dock in Dublin city centre. It was part of an experiment to see if I could hack it and ideally then buy one. I’m afraid the cold has chased me off the idea.
My office is a three-minute walk down the road. I could work from home, but it wouldn’t make much sense.
I worked in theatre in Ireland for years before getting into tech so have a long list of theatres and cultural events I try to stay up to date with. If you’re new to town, I would start with the festivals; Dublin Theatre Festival, Dublin Fringe, Dublin Film Festival. They are all brilliant.
Dublin is a village. Its interconnectedness will surprise, delight and frustrate. I love Grogans for a pint, Peruke & Periwig for a cocktail and Bagots Hutton for wine. Guinness is good for you.
What do I like about living in Ireland? The sense of humour and the access to art and culture.

I’ve lived in Arklow, Co Wicklow since 2003. It’s a seaside town with lovely walks along the seafront and beautiful blue flag beaches in nearby Clogah.
We love hiking in Glendalough and along the Wicklow Way trails, enjoying the views and exercising at the same time. The Wicklow Aikido Club is in Ashford, only 15 minutes down the road and Arklow also has a good cinema and a well- equipped leisure centre.
There are so many good bars and restaurants in the area. Our favourite is the Strawberry Tree in Macreddin Village and most Sundays we have dinner at the Wicklow Heather, a rustic restaurant and whiskey bar serving classic top Irish food at reasonable prices. Particularly enjoyable in winter after a three-hour hill walk in Glendalough!
I love Jameson or Bushmills whiskies and we like to bring bottles with personalised labels to family in Argentina as presents, they adore them.
Arklow is a convenient commuting distance from Dublin, the latest M11 upgrade made it even faster and safer. Working in Ireland is enjoyable: the working atmosphere is professional, focused and hardworking, but conscious of the need for a work/life balance. I like the management style, as well as the social clubs, the charities and the support in professional development.
