2015 was a strong start to the IDA’s five-year strategy, Winning: Foreign Direct Investment 2015-2019. In January of this year, the Government agency responsible for attracting foreign direct investment announced the highest level of employment in its client companies in its 67 year history. Just under 19,000 jobs were created across a range of sectors with total employment at overseas companies now standing at 187,056 people. According to the organisation, the ability to source skilled talent was the chief driver of the performance combined with Ireland’s long track record of attracting global companies. The number of investments secured in 2015 rose from to 213 from 197 in 2014 and new name investments went from 88 to 94. Some of the key highlights were Apple’s €850 million investment in Athenry, Galway with 300 jobs; the new Facebook data centre in Clonee, Co Meath and Alexion Pharmaceuticals €450 million expansion in Dublin which included 800 construction jobs.

Credit Suisse are soon to open their first Trading Floor in Dublin which will offer many of the business’s Prime services including Prime Brokerage, Prime Financing and Securities Lending across global markets. At the announcement, Tim O’Hara, CEO of Global Markets, Credit Suisse said, “This marks a first for Ireland and for Credit Suisse. The broad talent pool and efficiencies that the capital city has to offer made the decision to deploy operations in Dublin an easy one. We have long admired Ireland’s commitment to and vision for the country’s future as a European financial services centre and we are excited to establish our Prime Services business here.” The opening will create an estimated 100 positions.
