ADAPT worked withWeLocalize, a company with 700 employees engaged in translation, localisation and other content management services, to help them reach out to customers across the globe.


“Years ago, a client would come to us


and give us the source codes for their software along with their help files and we would translate them”, says WeLocalize principal engineer David Clarke. “When we moved into areas like natural language processing and machine translation, working with the Centre was a no-brainer. Our relationship has evolved over the past three or four years. One of the benefits of working with ADAPT for a service company like ours is that we are able to work on the development of the products to support our own services.”


One example is the iOmegaT open source tool for translators. “This is a machine translation tool but we had to verify its effectiveness for our clients,” explains Clarke. “We knew it should reduce time to market but we had to prove that. We worked with the Centre to compare the time it took for professional human translators to work with the assistance of the tool and without it. We were able to show that it was 5 per cent to 20 per cent faster.”
