The Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation has invested €2.8 million through the Science Foundation Ireland in 42 initiatives aimed at engaging the Irish public in science, technology, engineering and maths. It is estimated that these STEM projects will touch 3.6 million people in Ireland by the end of next year.

Limerick has been earmarked as a ‘European City of the Future,’ according to fDi Intelligence magazine, a division of the Financial Times. The Munster city was named European City of the Future in its population category and was a runner-up in the category for Business Friendliness, Economic Potential and FDI Strategy.
National University of Ireland, Galway is investing €7.5 million in an international recruitment campaign to attract high calibre early-career researchers. The Foundation Research Leadership Programme will look for graduates biomedical science and engineering, data analytics and computational sciences.

The future is bright if the EU Digital Girl of the Year is anything to go by. Ireland secured the title for the second time last December when Dubliner Niamh Scanlon (13) won, taking over the crown from Cork girl Lauren Boyle, the 2014 winner. Scanlon has been programming for six years, learning to code at CoderDojo when she was nine before moving on to website design and app development.
A four-year strategy to make Ireland a global medtech hub has been unveiled by the Irish Medical Devices Association (IMDA). Bucking the economic trends, the medtech sector in Ireland has continued to grow with exports reaching €8.5 billion and over 27,000 people working in the sector, making Ireland one of the largest employers of medtech professionals in Europe. Identifying trade barriers and skills needs, fostering cooperation between sectors such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and facilitating new funding opportunities are among the areas of focus for the strategy.
