Which other areas of your practice, in addition to docketing, does Patricia help you with? It
is indeed integrated and off ers various
features that are helping us in our work every day: workfl ows, for harmonising our procedures and facilitating
training; and
source information, for managing customer relationships, accounting, verifying confl icts, and automated letter templates, etc.
How did you fi nd the process of change and implementation? What advice would you give to other large IP fi rms considering change? T e main diffi culty of
the transition was
the transition itself. T e diffi culty of such a project does not lie with technical features, or particular tasks of a high complexity. Rather, the real diffi culty is the unknown: where do we want to go? What will be the outcome? I have clear advice: even if the possibilities off ered by Patricia are wide-ranging, in the beginning you have to keep it simple. Do not add too much automation to a very
sophisticated process immediately—it is better to do so once you and your users can understand precisely what Patricia can do. I wouldn’t say that it is a never-ending process, but it certainly doesn’t stop on the go-live date. We are looking at implementing further features: invoicing, advanced managing of documents, Patricia Collaboration Portal, to name a few.
We understand that Bereskin & Parr is organised and dedicated to harmonising, documenting and enforcing best practice. How does Patricia help you with this? I would immediately cite workfl ows and letter
templates: these are two keys features on which to rely to harmonise procedures and train staff along the same lines. In the past, we needed to maintain long and tedious staff manuals, detailing the step-by-step process to follow, for example, for how to fi le a trademark application. With the Patricia workfl ows, it is not needed, since the whole process is modelled into the workfl ow. It also enables more stable quality of process. As the Patricia web version uses the exact
same backend database as the Windows version, you have the capability to easily move to the alternative platform in the future.
You started in the Mac environment, so was Patricia’s technology being transportable a contributory factor to your decision to implement it? Yes. Actually, we have already benefi ted from this by being able to switch from web to Windows and it was straightforward and smooth.
As you know, Patrix is launching its new Patricia app. Are you planning to use this tool? Yes, of course—we look forward to more mobility for our attorneys.
Although a growing company, Patrix has been eager to ensure that it remains approachable at all levels. How do you fi nd interacting with the Patrix team, from support up to owner level? I recently had a chat with my colleagues who are in contact with Patrix for day-to-day matters. T ey all confi rmed that interactions were excellent, easy and fruitful. Nothing to say on that subject, except: keep on.
If you could give us one sentence that encapsulates your understanding of Patrix

and Patricia and what it does for your business, what would it be? In one application, Patricia allows us to get a snapshot of one, several, or all of a client’s cases, quickly evaluate their position and provide the best and most relevant advice. T is is indeed more than mere docketing, and this is what our clients expect.
Would you swap Patricia for any other IP software? No, absolutely not.
