value of existing patents, it’s not surprising that inventors, IP professionals and business leaders are a little anxious about the future. Patents are a valuable monetary asset to
individual inventors and companies alike. Both types of right owners are looking to use solutions that can untangle the jungle of US patent law and ensure they file the right inventions and get a fair price when buying, selling or licensing their patents. In addition, corporations are concerned about whether their investments in research and development yield returns as well as competitive advantage. Te ever-changing IP landscape creates
a growing space for patent analytics firms such as Silicon Valley-based Relecura Inc. Its flagship product, Relecura, was launched in 2010 as a patent analysis tool, stressing the aspects of convenience and clarity. With curated information from patents, a clean and easy-to-navigate user interface, and a strong analytics and visualisation engine, Relecura is built to address the requirements of different IP stakeholders to keep up with the changes in the IP landscape. “Organisations are concerned that the value
of their patents decreased because of the Alice ruling and some have even changed their corporate policy on filing their inventions. It shows how sensitive the IP landscape is to these types of rulings,” says Relecura Inc founder George Koomullil.
“THE COMMON DENOMINATORS ARE CONVENIENCE AND ACCESSIBILITY. WE ARE DETERMINED TO PROVIDE THE RIGHT TOOL AND FEATURES IN THE HANDS OF OUR CUSTOMERS.”
Convenience Relecura stresses a user-friendly philosophy that translates into products adaptable to diverse types of customers, from an inventor with one patent to companies with large portfolios. “We believe that each stakeholder in IP has
unique needs and unique ways of analysing intellectual property,” Koomullil explains. “Te common denominators are convenience and accessibility. We are determined to provide the right tool and features in the hands of our customers. Relecura offers a wide range of customised IP tools, including a free mobile app, a web-based analytics tool, and application program interfaces (APIs). Te mobile app is offered for free on the Google Play store and Apple’s App Store.” He adds: “Te goal of the mobile app is to provide a useful IP analysis tool in the hands

of everyone. If someone wants to know about the inventions anywhere in the world in an area of research, or the patents owned by an organisation, they do not need to go anywhere else; it can be done from their mobile phones. “Te mobile app is integrated with the Relecura
web tool. Users can start a search in the mobile app and view and analyse it further in the web tool, and vice versa.” Te web-based analytics tool enables in-depth analysis of patents and portfolios using unique features built from data curated from each patent. Te simplicity of these features and the insights these provide is, he says, valuable, whether the user is doing a prior art search, technology landscaping, acquiring competitive intelligence, or monetising a portfolio of patents. Koomullil describes this as the “most exciting” part of the tool. “We make it easier to share insights with
others in an effort to bring everyone together in the discussion on IP and decision-making,” Koomullil says. He continues: “Many of our customers would like to share their work with colleagues as well as clients. We enabled them to extend access to the data and analytics features to anyone they choose, by introducing Public Portfolios and Public Documents. Like many other features of Relecura, this is again unique to our products.” How does he work with corporate customers
that have their own process for analysing and managing IP? “We do not expect them to
