Focusing on trademarks
Aſter its trip abroad last year (to Hong Kong), the annual meeting of the
International Trademark Association (INTA) returns to US shores in 2015, taking place in San Diego from May 2 to 6. It provides a forum for discussing all things trademarks, and by the end of the event you should be well versed in everything from counterfeiting in China to passing off in Panama.
For several thousand people, trademarks are a big deal at this time of year, so we would be missing a trick if our analysis didn’t match that. In this issue of World IP Review, you can find a feature on genericide—an old but rare phenomenon—an interview with INTA’s president J. Scott Evans, a preview of the meeting itself, and an interview with Starbucks.
Tis issue’s cover story, a feature on well-known trademarks, focuses mainly on the US, Russia and India, revealing some of the companies to have achieved well- known status and explaining how difficult it can be to judge a company’s reputation.
Elsewhere, we have a detailed interview with Hitoshi Ito, the commissioner of the Japan Patent Office, one of the so-called IP5, analysis of the dispute between Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE over standard-essential patents, and an update on proposed renewal fees for the pending unitary patent.
We look forward to seeing you at INTA. Ed Conlon, Group editor
