Thermal Flow Switch Ensures Process Safety at NGL Fractionation Facilities
New Solution for Integrating Measurement Applications
Flow-Cal, Inc. has recently released a new and streamlined solution for integrating the measurement needs of office and field personnel with Flow- Cal’s TESTit and Enterprise applications.
TESTit stand-alone version 3.0 was officially launched last year offering an improved user interface and the integration of Flow-Cal’s field product line, TESTit, PROVEit and PYCit, into one powerful gas and liquids field application. Following this major release, Flow-Cal began focusing on the design of a new integrated solution between TESTit and Flow-Cal’s flagship product, FLOWCAL Enterprise.
With integration already available between FLOWCAL and TESTit’s prior version 2, Flow-Cal’s product management team identified a new, scalable approach for the integrated TESTit 3 and its future releases. The latest solution was officially launched last month after an extensive beta programme with participants from Flow-Cal’s user community.
“We’ve taken a new approach to our development strategy for integrating FLOWCAL and TESTit 3,” says Flower Pledger, Flow-Cal’s Director of Product Management. “This new, streamlined solution will be more scalable for our clients and easier to maintain as their needs evolve.”
Engineers at natural gas liquids (NGL) fractionation processing facilities will find the dependable FLT93L® Series FlexSwitch™ from Fluid Components International (FCI) to be an effective and highly reliable solution for process relief valve leak monitoring in this demanding petrochemical process.
NGL fractionation processing facilities separate ethane, propane, butane and other heavier hydrocarbons from the natural gas stream. Multiple trains and columns are used in this fractional distillation process, and the relief valves are critical safety protection devices.
For the process to work efficiently and safely, the operation requires early and reliable indication when a relief valve leaks or lifts during an overpressure situation. The FLT93L Switch accurately monitors the pressure relief valves for escaping flow with a thermal dispersion technology flow sensing switch/alarm.
In this application, an inline configuration FLT93L is placed on 0.5- and 1-inch (DN15 and DN 25) diameter pipes. The FLT93L Switch detects leaking or seeping gas in the lines to alert the engineer to over pressurisation. It issues a programmed alarm during such events. For the system to work properly, the FLT93L must detect low flows and yet avoid issuing false alarms that could seriously impact plant operations.
The FLT93L Switch offers a number of advantages at NGL facilities in overpressure monitoring. Not all gas flow sensing technologies are able to detect the required low levels of leaking or seeping gas, which can cause an overpressure event that puts plant safety at risk. The opposite situation also can occur where some alternative flow sensing technologies issue nuisance false alarms frequently, disrupting plant operations.
For example, differential pressure (dP) and vane type technologies have been tried in this application with limited success. Problems have been experienced resulting from a lack of low flow detection, mechanical breakdowns, etc.
Beyond accurate monitoring, the FLT93L Switch offers a number of other advantages in this application. It is easy to install and set-up: FCI’s voltage output allows user to see into the process and accurately set the desired trip point. Flexible dual relays are settable by the plant technician for any combination of flow and/or temperature alarms.
FCI’s unique sensor technology combined with temperature compensation circuitry provides unparalleled performance capabilities: The FLT93L Switch’s flow accuracy is ±2% of the setpoint velocity over a ±50°F [±28°C] temperature range. Repeatability is ±0.5% reading.
A wide selection of standard and custom process connections can be provided. The electronic control circuit can be integrally-mounted with the sensing element, or it can be located in a remote location. The standard enclosure is a coated aluminum alloy and is rated for NEMA Type 4X (IP67) environments. Global agency approvals for Ex installations are provided. It is SIL 2 rated for reliability.

When test data is entered into TESTit’s stand-alone version, flow-error due to calibration is automatically calculated, an electronic test report is created, and files are saved for reporting, scheduling, archiving, and exporting. When integrated with FLOWCAL, this data is then sent to the office and stored in TESTit’s server application, which automatically updates FLOWCAL Enterprise with current test report information. FLOWCAL Enterprise automatically identifies inconsistencies in the calculation and equipment variables, as well as excessive calibration discrepancies, to facilitate volume recalculation requirements.
FLOWCAL Enterprise is used throughout the industry to validate, balance, store, and report gas and liquid measurement data. FLOWCAL Enterprise was developed as a corporate solution for the most demanding system requirements, minimising the efforts of managing a complex measurement department.

Process and plant engineers with operations or sub-systems that require, SIL safety, IEC 61508, compliance can now look to the new advanced ST51A and ST75A Thermal Mass Flow Meters from US-based Fluid Components International (FCI) as their solution for air/gas flow measurement.
For engineers designing safety instrumented systems, these models are the industry’s most compact, lowest cost thermal flow meters to carry a SIL rating. They were independently evaluated by world leading functional safety experts, Exida, and found to meet SIL 1 compliance.
The Model ST51A Flow Meter is an insertion-style instrument designed for use in pipe diameters larger than 2 inches (51 mm). The ST51A meter is optimised for flow measurement of air, compressed air, nitrogen, natural gas, digester gas and all other biogases.
The ST75A Flow Meter is an inline-style instrument designed for use in pipe diameters from 0.25 inch to 2 inches (6 to 51 mm). The ST75A meter is designed for applications in air, all inert gases, natural gas and other hydrocarbon gases.
Both models feature wide 100:1 turndown, have no moving parts, carry global agency approvals for Div.1/Zone 1 Ex installations, superior IP67 dust/water ingress protection and rugged, all metal enclosures. A two-year warranty is also standard.
For interface and communications these instrument’s outputs include dual 4-20mA which meet NAMUR 43, HART Version 7, certified by the FieldComm Group (HART), and a 500Hz pulse. Optionally available is two-line LCD readout to display flow rate and either temperature or totalized flow.
The transmitter/electronics can be integrally mounted with the flow element or remote mounted up to 100 feet (30 m) away. Users have a choice of 24 Vdc or 85 Vac to 265 Vac powering. The transmitter enclosure is available in either painted aluminum or stainless steel, and can be ordered with either NPT or metric threaded cable ports.
Both the ST51A and ST75A meters are temperature compensated and calibrated to the user’s actual installation conditions in one of FCI’s 19 flow stands using NIST and ISO/IEC 17025 traceable equipment. For applications with limited straight-run, the ST51A and ST75A can be supplied with and calibrated specifically for use with Vortab Flow Conditioners.
Fluid Components International is a global company committed to meeting the needs of its customers through innovative solutions to the most challenging requirements for sensing, measuring and controlling flow, level and temperature of air, gases, and liquids.
