Comprehensive and Fully-Automated Solution for High Temperature GPC/ SEC in Polyolefins

Automated External Filtration System for Carbon Black and

Polymer Char’s GPC-IR® instrument is a reliable multiple detector Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) system dedicated to the characterisation of polyolefins. It incorporates high-stability infrared (IR) detectors with outstanding baseline and simultaneous detection of total concentration and chemical composition, which adds a new dimension to the GPC analysis. The built-in IR detection provides the most comprehensive characterisation of polymers such as HDPE, PP, LDPE, LLDPE, EP copolymers, EVA, EBA and others in the group of polyolefins, and the possibility of coupling Viscometer and Light Scattering (DAWN® HELEOS II™ by Wyatt Technology®) results in the most complete, four- detectors, instrument for polyolefin analysis. Polymer Char’s GPC-IR automatically performs all sample preparation steps including the initial filling of vials with solvent and in-line filtration. As a result, neither vial transfer nor manual handling of solvent is required throughout the whole analytical process. Other key automation features are incorporated to overcome historical problems usually arisen when working with high temperature GPC/SEC analysis, including the company’s Sample Care protocols that preserve the sample integrity along the whole analytical cycle. Polymer Char’s GPC-IR represents a new generation of instruments for polyolefin characterisation in terms of repeatability, automation, and reliability.

Fast GPC/SEC for Molar Mass Distribution in

Production and Plant Environments

www.polymerchar.com GPC-IR

GPC-QC, from Polymer Char, is a compact high- temperature GPC/SEC instrument for quality control and process control in polyolefin manufacturing lines, providing robust and precise Molar Mass Distribution. It delivers the complete Molar Mass Distribution for one sample through a simplified workflow, while keeping full automation of sample preparation and analysis free of manual solvent handling throughout the entire process, which takes 30 minutes including dissolution. The IR detection implemented in the instrument through Polymer Char’s integrated IR4 or IR5 MCT detectors, is highly stable, contributing to the overall reliability while at the same time, providing chemical composition information, which is key for controlling production of heterogeneous resins. This is particularly relevant in the case of copolymers that account for a large proportion of polyolefins produced, such as LLDPE, some HDPE, and the important group of EP copolymers as well. The information generated by the IR detector can be translated to either co-monomer weight fraction or to density units for a given product range. Moreover, for a truly complete analysis, the instrument can measure intrinsic viscosity by means of a built-in dual capillary viscometer that can be incorporated optionally.

Other Additives of Small Particle Size in Polyolefins Filtration is required in many cases before injection, when using light scattering detectors, but also to extend the life of fragile GPC columns. Polymer Char, with the most complete range of instruments for Polyolefin Characterisation, has introduced this year a series of accessories to facilitate this task in the polyolefin characterisation laboratories; the EFS is an automated, fast and innovative apparatus for eliminating carbon black, rest of catalysts or other additives of small particle size that may be present in polyolefin samples. The process is fast, easy and safe for the user as there is no solvent handling nor manual vial transfer. Once the sample is dissolved, the user pierces the vial on the system and starts the EFS operation. Then, the solution is automatically transferred to an empty vial while passing through a disposable filtration cartridge. Around 2 minutes later, the sample is clean and ready to be injected into the GPC instrument. Thanks to its smart design, the solution travels through those disposable cartridges only, so no-cross contamination may occur nor any vapours are released to the ambient as solvent circulates through a closed circuit only, unlike the manual and traditional way using glass fiber filters, or the available semi-automated equipment from other providers. After each filtration process, another one can be started right away, minimising the user dedication to the filtration tasks, which are usually tedious and require a significant manpower within the daily tasks of all the laboratories. EFS means a breakthrough in external filtration, being the only automated system in the market capable of eliminating the carbon black completely in an effective, fast and safe process.
