Penetration Measurements of Bitumen and Wax with Automatic Surface Detection
The accuracy and repeatability of a penetrometer’s results are heavily dependent on the operator’s ability to position the test probe on a sample’s surface. The PNR 12 penetrometer from Anton Paar eliminates that variable by automatically detecting the surface of bitumen samples underneath a layer of water by means of a special force sensor plunger. After placing the needle tip exactly on top of the water covering the bitumen sample, the needle assembly freely plunges into the cup and performs the job. This eliminates any errors from observation of the reflected image of the needle tip in the water bath by the human eye. This outstanding feature allows precise positioning of the test probe even by inexperienced personnel.
PNR 12 digitally displays test conditions and measurement results in a self-explanatory manner. For user-friendly operation, PNR 12 comes with a jog wheel (push and turn). Limit settings can be used to set upper and lower limits for penetration depth. Alarms will be given after the test if a result falls outside of the required range of the product specification.
Up to 200 test results are stored in the internal device memory and are easily read out via USB and converted to Excel. The connection to a lab data management network is another sophisticated possibility for further result reports and calculations. A certified calibration kit that includes a measurement time check feature and a temperature sensor for recording test conditions is also available.
In addition to standard programs (bitumen, wax, grease), PNR 12 is ready for up to 16 user- defined programs. The instrument and the test kits all comply with national and international standards like ASTM, EN, ISO, DIN, JIS, etc. Officially certified needles can be obtained from Anton Paar.

Improve Traceability and Profitability in Cold Behaviour Analysis
Cold behaviour analysis finds applications in various areas. In diesel fuel analysis the Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) analysis is a key element and is measured according ASTM D6371, while in jet analysis Freezing Point analysis will be at the top of the list (ASTM D7153). In the lubricants and grease industry, Pour and Cloud Point analysis is performed frequently. In the market there is excellent automated equipment available such as the PAC OptiFZP for freezing point analysis who will perform accurate analysis according to the standard method.
Important analysis comes with a great risk, falling back on the standard method is not enough to ensure traceable results. To eliminate deviations of your analyser’s results compared to other equipment, European Lab Services (ELS) provides trustworthy verification of petroleum analysers such as the OptiFPP for CFPP analysis and makes sure each step of the ASTM D6371 or EN 116 is checked thoroughly. This verification is of enormous importance in order to benefit most from an analyser: the result accuracy and traceability is guaranteed, any discussion concerning the results is eliminated and the proactive verification approach will heavily reduce risk of downtime.
The on-site verification program for a CFPP analyser describes the calibration of the temperature sensor on 4 points in an accredited lab and verification of the display temperature, verification of suction time and differential pressure. The offsets are programmed and verified. The system will be evaluated with a standard reference product and a ISO 17025 certificate will be delivered.
European Lab Services (ELS) is the only company worldwide performing on-site ISO 17025 accredited verification for petroleum analysers for cold behaviour testing.

New Convertible Karl Fischer Instrument Released Mitsubishi Chemical
Analytech (Japan) adds yet another unique moisture meter to the lineup, the KF-31. Following the compact coulometric Karl Fischer moisture meter model CA-31 which was released last year, the KF-31 offers the volumetric option.
Not only is the KF-31 a compact and versatile volumetric Karl Fischer
instrument, it comes with the one and only CONVERTIBLE feature. What this means is that the KF-31 can be used not only as a volumetric Karl Fischer system, but also as a coulometric system by simply replacing the cell set. This allows the user to use one compact, cost efficient unit to fulfill both coulometric and volumetric applications. No more need to purchase a high end, expensive instrument to cover the complete application range.
Many of the welcomed features of CA-31 are also available with KF-31. The 5.7-inch colour LCD touch panel enables the user to operate practically manual-free, and all necessary information visible in one view.
Numerous vapourisers from the Mitsubishi product line-up can be connected to the KF-31 to accommodate difficult to dissolve samples such as powders, pellets, pastes, lubricants, etc. By connecting Mitsubishi’s model VG-200 to KF-31, liquefied gas samples can also be measured easily.
PC software TV-31 will enable users to collect measurement results from KF-31 and prepare reports with titration charts, parameters, calculation formula, etc. in Microsoft Word®
or Excel® format. The instrument can be purchased together with Mitsubishi’s Aquamicron® series of
Karl Fischer reagents covering the whole range of coulometric anode/cathode solutions and volumetric solvents/titrants. These reagents are developed together with the instruments for the best combined performance.
