GW Pharmaceuticals plc and the Government of New South Wales (NSW) Australia, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU,) to progress a research program for Epidiolex® (cannabidiol or CBD) and cannabidivarin (CBDV) in children with severe, drug resistant childhood epilepsy.

The NSW Government is providing $3.5 million to the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network to lead the Phase 2 clinical trial of CBDV in children, which is expected to commence in 2016. The agreement also delivers a compassionate access program for Epidiolex for a small number of children who are too sick to participate in a clinical trial, due to the unrelenting nature of their epilepsy. Like CBD, CBDV does not produce the psychoactive effects associated with herbal cannabis. The package is supported through the NSW Government’s $21 million commitment to support medicinal cannabis reforms.

TFS Celebrates Opening of GMP Facility
Thermo Fisher Scientifi c has announced the offi cial opening of its new GMP facility to meet the growing demand for clinical supply services in Singapore. Located in Toh Guan Road, Jurong East, the new facility is nearly 70,000 ft2 (6,500m2), more than 60% larger than the previous site established in 2001. With double the cold chain capacity it will provide a one-stop service for clinical supplies − from GMP storage, local labelling, secondary packaging, comparator sourcing, handling and distribution of ambient and cold chain supplies to returns management. Improved technologies and operational tools, include a larger storage system for its clinical supplies, a new climatic control energy consumption system that reduces the facility’s carbon footprint and an overall building monitoring system that provides staff with timely updates on the facility’s conditions.
Presentation Highlights Importance of Sample Preparation
This fl agship summit was the 10th since India introduced its Food Safety & Standards Act in 2006; its importance is notable since the Food & Beverage industry has now become the largest employment sector in India, having overtaken Textiles. Other speakers included experts from the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ministry of Food Processing, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as well as other leading representatives from the food manufacturing, safety and quality industry.
In his presentation, Stuart Ray discussed the importance of quality sample preparation for accurate food safety analyses. He also provided an overview of international standards and testing methods, commenting on their potential impact and relevance to the Indian domestic and export market.

The 10th National Food Safety and Quality Summit, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) focused on ‘Integrating Global Perspectives on Food Safety and Quality for Enhanced Consumer Safety’.
“In recent years we have experienced an increasing demand in India for our sample preparation products; this is not surprising given the ongoing growth in its food export market,” said Stuart Ray, Seward Ltd. “With the introduction of India’s new food safety legislation and drive towards aligning all standards with Codex Alimentaris, we can fully support food manufacturers in this drive due to our global experience and understanding in food sample preparation for microbiology.”

A new offi ce in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is now handling all sales, service, support and distribution of Waters and TA Instrument technologies direct to customers. “Due to the dynamic development of the analytical instrument business in Malaysia, Waters is delighted to extend our support to our expanding customer base by establishing direct in-country operations.
