48 Selecting the Correct Assay Plate
Correct assay plate selection is vital for successful research, whether you are performing absorbance, fluorescence or luminescence assays. Porvair Sciences offers a wide range of assay plates which are recognised as industry-leading tools for Pharma drug discovery and screening.
A new guide, contained within an updated assay
plates mini catalogue, has been produced by Porvair to provide information and guidance on how to choose the correct assay plate for your research.
By carefully selecting the correct plate type for your assay, it is possible to significantly improve results. By following the simple instructions set out in the guide, those tasked with assay development can ensure that their final assay has the best possible chance of success. A table is included in the guide that summarises the choices available for Assay Plate selection and indicates the plate type most likely to give the best results.
Porvair Sciences are happy to supply samples of their plates for evaluation free of charge, as different detection systems and differing assay development may lead to variances in results between ostensibly similar plate types.

35970pr@reply-direct.com The New Generation of Test Sieve Shakers
‘Making proven technology even better’ is the motto under which the EML 200 range was revamped and improved.
The Haver EML 200 Premium offers practical innovation, it is much quieter than its predecessor model and so allows comfortable work in the laboratory environment along with high performance. The transmission of vibrations to the base is strongly reduced by an improved damping system. The extra-large display provides a good overview and lets the machine to be operated intuitively.
With wet screening the Haver EML 200 Remote comes in operation with the proven external control unit and is flexibly placed in the laboratory. The cover’s function and design were optimised. The full-cone nozzle was elegantly integrated in the cover and so handling is improved. The viewing-glass-equipped cover allows normal observation of material during the sieving process. Also here the large display goes to work.
In addition to the Premium version, there will also be the Haver EML Pure. The new test sieve shaker offers complete clarity in operation. In addition to the amplitude assignment of coarse or fine, no further adjustments are necessary to start the sieving process. The new Haver EML Pure is highly suitable as the basis model for standard analyses.
All three test sieve shakers operate independently of power supply and frequency, and thus can be used without transformers worldwide. The Haver EML 200 series is suitable for analysis sieves up to 203 mm in diameter and for a maximum sample amount of up to 3 kg.
With the Haver EML 200 Premium, Pure, and Remote the new design is a smooth evolution. Subdued yet significant changes were undertaken from top to bottom. The main characteristics were worked out and changed in cooperation with an industrial designer and the result is a unit that is sleek, streamline and optimal for use in the laboratory.
The new Haver EML 200 generation of laboratory test sieve shakers were presented to the international public for the first time at Achema in Frankfurt and will replace the current EML 200 digital plus generation of Haver test sieve shakers beginning in September 2015.
35174pr@reply-direct.com New High Quality Centrifuge Introduced
The Hi Cen GR from Herolab GmbH Laborgeräte is a further addition to its well-known and highly regarded range of centrifuges and accessories.
This dedication to quality and the use of innovative solutions can be found across the Herolab range and has recently earned the prestigious Stifterverband Seal. This is particularly the case with the multi-purpose Hi Cen GR centrifuge. This large volume floor standing refrigerated centrifuge has a maximum capacity of 4 x 1000ml and can be used with Swing-out or Angle rotors. Its speed of up to 18,000 rpm and g-force of 36.223 x g puts this model at the high end of performance levels.
New Double-Walled Bottles Introduced
The Duran Group has further extended the range of DURAN® GLS 80® wide mouth laboratory bottles by introducing two new double-walled bottles.
These new GLS 80® bottles incorporate an integral DURAN® glass jacket that isolates the contents from the external environment. Cooled or heated liquids, from -40 to +120°C, can be circulated through the jacket to control the temperature within the bottle. The potential applications include; use as a simple bioreactor for microbial or cell culture, as a thermostatic container or as a temperature-controlled reaction vessel. The GLS 80® screw cap of the bottles offer a secure seal and a more flexible alternative to traditional open topped jacketed beakers. The GLS 80® thread is compatible with the full range of GLS 80® cap connection systems, which further enhance flexibility and usefulness of the double-walled bottles by allowing the mixing, addition or removal of liquids during processing. The wide 65 mm diameter GLS 80® mouth also provides unobstructed access for the easy removal of the contents, and for a fast clean up. The new bottles are manufactured from DURAN® borosilicate 3.3 glass, which is renowned for its excellent thermal performance and high resistance to chemical attack. The DURAN® glass and all other components can be sterilised by autoclaving. The DURAN® GLS 80® double walled bottles are available in two sizes with either a 500 or a 1000 ml capacity.

Many users will find the ability to run a number of tubes in a swing-out rotor very useful. It is also possible to centrifuge small volumes at high speed in a fixed angle rotor [10ml tubes at 17500 rpm – 33.554 xg]. If you need to centrifuge high volumes such as 4 x 1000 ml in a swing-out rotor or 4 x 750ml in a swing-out rotor with windshield this is also possible with this very versatile machine. In total 19 different swing-out and fixed angle rotors are available.
As is typical with many of the Herolab centrifuges, this microprocessor controlled model has a number of standard features including maintenance free, brushless induction drive, stainless steel chamber with additional inner guard ring, over-speed detection, imbalance detection and cut-off. A motorised lid lock, automatic lid opening and emergency lid lock release complete the safety aspects of this exceptional product.
Herolab have been producing quality scientific products for 36 years. The centrifuge division is well known for producing well engineered and robust models. Says Herolab “We are very pleased with the Hi Cen GR and we expect our many customers to be equally impressed with the performance and quality of this product. They will also be very pleased to find its attractive price.”
Herolab products are also now available from its UK base in Cambridge.

Benchtop Laboratory Autoclave Range Give a Clean Sweep
The complete range of Priorclave benchtop laboratory autoclaves are now available with short stand-off legs to provide easy access beneath the steam steriliser for much easier cleaning and disinfection of laboratory work surfaces. It makes the benchtop autoclave range an ideal choice for organisations either planning or operating a Cat3 laboratory and limited on space.
The new versatile front loading design is available from the manufacturer Priorclave with sterilising chambers up to 60 litres capacity (350mm diameter), offers flexibility for both single or multi programs and a choice of standard or highly efficient vacuum operation.
Benchtop autoclaves are the smallest in the Priorclave range and should appeal to laboratories with low volume requirements, limited space whilst allowing them to enjoy a level of settings and operating flexibility usually reserved for larger autoclaves. The many design benefits of this feature-packed range is available at an affordable price that will be appreciated by start-up labs on limited budget as well as the more established operations.
The smallest model, the C40 autoclaves weighs in at just 70kg and as with all models, it is extremely easy to install powered from a standard single phase supply.
Introduction of the bench-top autoclave range with stand-off legs brings significant advantages to designated CAT 3 application areas providing much easier access beneath the steriliser for cleaning to prevent spread of virus and eliminate potential cross contamination. Another added benefit of investing in a Priorclave manufactured autoclave is the anti-microbial surface protection that prevents cross contamination.
All Stand-Off Compact models have access to an extended range of options and accessories that enable Priorclave to deliver a laboratory autoclave matched to specific requirements. This creates a brand that can turn its steam sterilisation capability to many business sectors including food, drink, dairy, pharmaceutical, veterinary, agricultural, education, healthcare, research establishments as well as industrial laboratories.
